The Academy for Teachers is Hiring a Program Assistant Near New York, NY

To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume as one document to: work@academyforteachers.org. Subject heading: Application - Program Assistant.

The Academy for Teachers brings teachers together with world-class luminaries, experts, and artists—and with each other—for inspiring master classes and special events. As the premiere provider of professional development in New York City (and perhaps the world) we have created a community of passionate, like-minded teachers from public, charter, and private schools.

We are looking for a program assistant. This full-time position offers an opportunity to make a significant contribution to a fast-growing, high-potential, and unique organization. We need a hardworking, detail-oriented, and collaborative colleague who enjoys working independently but is also a team player. The Academy is small, so the program assistant must be flexible and nimble. We’re all working hard toward the same goal of providing inspiring programs for hardworking, underappreciated teachers.

The program assistant will report to the two associate directors for programs and help organize, run, and facilitate follow-up for the Academy's master classes, special events, and other programs. Much of the work will be remote, but attendance at our in-person events—usually during the day, but sometimes in the evening and occasionally on the weekend—is also part of the job. Most days our schedule is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but there will be times when the hours are longer, particularly for our in-person events. This means some flexibility is required, but we’ll return the favor. (Our “flex time” policy assumes a work week of no more than 40 hours.)

Responsibilities of the program assistant include:

  • Support and attend programs, making sure they run smoothly and that teachers feel welcome and taken care of.
  • Coordinate program logistics, including venue booking, ordering food, setting up the venue, managing A/V, and generally taking care of any problems that may arise.
  • Assist with applications, participant selection, and registration.
  • Produce program materials, including agendas, name tents, print-outs, presentations, etc.
  • Maintain records in our database related to programs, participants, and evaluations.
  • Support data collection and analysis for program evaluation.
  • Monitor program budgets, track expenses, and process reimbursements.
  • Communicate in a clear and friendly manner with teachers, sending them program information and responding to their inquiries.
  • Help with marketing materials and web updates.
  • Take initiative, and share insights and suggestions for improvements to our programs and processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Not sure you meet every requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this position.

  • Must live in the NYC metro area
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to work when needed, supporting live programs outside of a 9-5 workday
  • A passion for our mission and an understanding of why teachers need us
  • Efficient, organized, and punctual
  • Collaborative, positive, and a self-starter
  • Excellent writing skills and a horror of education jargon
  • Basic familiarity with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.), and other tools (Asana, Zoom)
  • Enough comfort with technology to learn how to use our database (Salesforce) and other platforms (FormAssembly, Mailchimp, Sanity.io, etc.)

Bonus Points for:

  • Good graphic design and marketing skills, and a working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.)
  • Teaching experience

Salary and Benefits:

$55,000-60,000 based on experience.

Great benefits, including:

  • Three weeks paid vacation
  • Thirteen additional paid holidays
  • Medical, dental, vision (80% employer contribution) and life (100% employer) insurance
  • After one year of employment, 401K with a generous 6% employer contribution

To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume as one document to: work@academyforteachers.org. Subject heading: Application - Program Assistant.
