The Abraham Joshua Heschel School is Hiring an Associate Director of College Counseling Near New York, NY

Abraham Joshua Heschel School, located in New York City, is an independent, pluralistic Jewish Day School, N-12, unaffiliated with any single movement or synagogue. The High School seeks to hire an enthusiastic and experienced professional for the full-time position of Associate Director of College Counseling who will join a college counseling team consisting of the Dean of College Counseling, the Director of College Counseling and a part-time administrative assistant. The Associate Director will report to the Director and Dean to support and guide students through their high school years as they plan for their post-secondary education. The team’s mission is to help every student make decisions about the next step of their education that will enable them to grow, thrive, and realize their personal goals. In addition, the Associate Director will work collaboratively with other members of the administration, staff, and faculty as a member of the high school community.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Advise a group [of around 30] students and their families; assist them through all aspects of the college application process, including research, building a list, and applications, through one-on-one, family and group meetings; set expectations and communicate proactively
  • Assist students with online application platforms, editing essays, interview preparation, athletic and/or artistic recruitment, and financial aid
  • Participate in school programs including, but not limited to grade meetings, parent coffees/meetings, and college planning programs.
  • Write compelling letters of recommendation that capture the students’ growth and strengths within the context of their high school experience; offer guidance to faculty regarding their written recommendations
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and faculty
  • Advise students on course selection and summer opportunities
  • Manage application materials and documents through the school’s online system
  • Develop and plan college counseling and financial aid events for students and families throughout the year
  • Establish new and maintain ongoing relationships with college admission officers
  • Participate in meetings of professional organizations, travel to colleges and universities as requested
  • Participate in or attend extracurricular programs, such as the annual school overnight retreat (Shabbaton), athletic events, performances, in order to get to know and support students
  • Master and instruct students in the use of the school’s online admissions platform (currently Naviance)
  • Participate in the administration of standardized tests
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • At least 3 years’ experience in selective college admissions; some college counseling experience strongly preferred
  • Sensitivity to the developmental issues and needs of high school students and their parents
  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking; excellent writing skills; strong organizational skills
  • Knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admissions policies and procedures
  • The ability to work independently and also collaboratively
  • Computer fluency; familiarity with Naviance preferred
