Telluride Regional Medical Center is Hiring a Lab Technician Near Telluride, CO

The purpose of the Lab Technician is to consistently provide quality care to patients in a warm and welcoming manner. Under the general supervision of the Lab Manager and in an outpatient clinical setting, the Lab Technician performs specialized medical and laboratory procedures of a routine nature, as directed by established clinical protocol. The Lab Technician maintains lab instruments and performs quality control and proficiency tests. Qualifications:Education and Formal Training:High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field preferred. Medical certificate/licensure not required but preferred.Experience:A minimum of one year experience in a laboratory setting is preferred.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Proficient in phlebotomy
  • Competent in blood handling, specimen processing, and storage requirements
  • Ability to perform standard clinical procedures according to established protocols
  • Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards
  • Ability to perform routine invasive procedures, such as venipuncture and injections, in accordance with established clinical protocol
  • Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements
  • Knowledge of outpatient clinical administrative procedures
  • Knowledge of inventory management practices
  • Spanish medical interpretation (preferred, but not required)
Other Duties and Responsibilities:Administrative Duties (may include, but not limited to):
  • Using all computer applications
  • Answering telephones
  • Obtain documents and lab orders from outside providers
  • Complete all documents for provider signatures (as much as possible)
  • Coding and timely entry of all charges
  • Schedule appointments for patients
  • Chart all procedures
Laboratory (may include, but not limited to):
  • Completion of laboratory procedure check list at onset of employment
  • Competency assessed at 6 months and yearly thereafter
  • Performing quality controls
  • Phlebotomy – venipuncture and capillary collection
  • Performs routine and non-routine tests and analyses using the appropriate technical equipment and instruments
  • Maintain maintenance and temperature logs
  • Giving injections (immunizations, boosters, PPD, etc)
  • Pre-planning next day lab appointments
  • Stocking supplies/inventory control
  • Trouble shoot instrumentation
  • Assign labs results to ordering provider
  • Follow up of critical lab results
  • Train other staff on lab procedures and protocol
  • Correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Clean and stock draw room
  • Assist PC as needed
  • Assist ED as needed in critical situations
eClinicalWorks (eCW) (may include, but not limited to):
    • Navigation of health care records
    • Creating telephone message
    • Locating orders
    • Signing off and locking charts
    • Faxing lab orders and results to outside providers
Infectious Disease Precautions (may include, but not limited to):
  • OSHA Standards, policy and procedure for universal precautions, biological hazards, infectious disease hazards, disposal and handling of biological waste, cleaning after biological contamination, respiratory droplet protection. (Isolation – contact vs. respiratory)
Immunizations (may include, but not limited to):
  • Basic understanding of immunizations and how they work
  • Preparing, administering, and documenting immunizations to child and adult
  • Follow ACIP and CDC guidelines
  • Documentation for the patient
  • Vaccines for Children (VFC) documentation
  • Understanding of the procedure for notifying the appropriate staff when supplies are low
  • Temperature logs
Clinical Procedures (may include, but not limited to):
  • Vital Sign – understanding alarm values (see triage notebook)
  • Documentation of procedures preformed
  • PPD placement and documentation
  • ZIO patches – placement and registration
  • Allergy Injections
Phone calls (may include, but not limited to):
  • Appropriate answering of the phones
  • Medical advice will be referred to nurse or providers
  • Over head paging and transferring calls
  • Phone call recording in eCW (TE)
Supervisory Duties:No supervisory duties.Job Specifications:Ability to perform physically demanding work such as moving and lifting equipment, standing for long periods of time, etc.Work Environment/Physical Activities:
  • Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
  • Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous chemical and biohazardous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions
  • Use of protective equipment (PPE)
  • Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Certification and/or licensures must be maintained
  • Successful candidate must submit to post offer.
  • TRMC will provide Hepatitis vaccination; candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Annual Influenza vaccination
  • A pre-employment background investigation may be required
  • CPR Certified
Additional Information:This is a non-exempt position. The position reports to the Lab Manager. It is essential that the employee must exhibit the ability to remain positive and focused in a fast paced environment. Willingness to work with various personality types to reach consensus in order to optimize services provided to both the patient and other departments. 
Pay range is $20 - $23 per hour.
