The Chief Plant Operator directs, and coordinates activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation and repair of mechanical or electromechanical products and systems.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Performance Requirements*
  • Supervises, schedules, and trains central plant operators
  • Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
  • Researches, plans and designs mechanical and electromechanical products and systems
  • Designs products or systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems
  • Plans and directs engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems
  • Directs and coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications
  • Coordinates operation, maintenance, and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment; establishes and maintains preventative maintenance schedules
  • Designs products and systems to interface machines, hardware, and software
  • Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions
  • Interfaces with contractors and vendors as necessary; ensures contracted work is performed in a timely and safe manner, and adheres to all established policies, procedures, and laws
  • Manages office functions, including task management, job assignments, communication with other staff and faculty, placing orders for parts and supplies, entering data for equipment, and payroll
  • Ensures proper environmental conditions are set throughout the district/campus of assignment
  • Troubleshoots equipment as necessary to identify and correct broken or failing parts
  • Operates and/or maintains equipment, including, but not limited to pools, chillers, heat pumps, furniture, generators, fire pumps, lighting equipment, and water meters
Service Excellence
  • Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite
  • Completes all required training and professional development sessions sponsored through the TCC Institute
  • Performs Other Related Tasks as Required

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Five (5) years of skilled crafts experience
  • One (1) year of supervising (e.g., managing and evaluating performance of others or managing processes, and or/ projects)
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification
  • HVAC Certification, Maintenance Electrician License and/or Apprentice Plumbers Certificate
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification
  • Journeyman level skills in at least one of the areas supervised
  • Vocational school training and experience in mechanics and/or instrument repair
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal relationships
  • Experience working with computerized systems
