Overview

Tanaq Environmental, LLC. (TEL) delivers environmental engineering, investigation, consulting, and remediation services to government agencies and private clients in the areas of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) restoration and Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) support. Tanaq is a subsidiary of the St. George Tanaq Corporation, an Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) committed to serving Federal customers while also giving back to the Alaskan native community and shareholders.

About the Role

Tanaq is seeking a staff-level Environmental Scientist to support remedial, geologic, and hydrogeologic investigations with oversight from a Project Manager. Works with other geologists, engineers, and/or field technicians on field investigations, including well drilling and installation, environmental investigations, and remediation efforts at various project locations. The job requires an understanding of environmental remediation concepts and the ability to monitor subcontractors to ensure the performance of work in accordance with environmental and contractual requirements. Job also includes collection of environmental samples (soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediments) at project sites.

This is a hybrid remote position supporting Fairchild Air Force Base located near Spokane, Washington.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to hotline calls, which may be required on weekends, after hours, or on holidays as needed to support the 24-hour hotline for Fairchild Air Force Base, WA project, to document and assess issues, and to coordinate and develop a follow-up plan of action with the Project Manager and government client.
  • May serve as Field Team Leader during field investigations, leading sampling of groundwater, soil, sediment, and surface water for laboratory analysis.
  • Documentation of field activities and sampling events.
  • Support preparation of lithologic logs, potentiometric surface maps, geographic information system (GIS) maps, and tables presenting results of field investigations.
  • Draft reports, including descriptions of geology, hydrogeology, the extent of contamination, and fate and transport of site contaminants.
  • Support the development of site remediation processes, including removal actions and in-situ treatment.
  • Support preparation of subcontract specifications and competitive procurement for remediation, drilling, and subsurface investigation subcontractors.
  • Oversee contractors conducting site remediation field activities, including groundwater injections and removal actions.
  • Support remediation planning, including preparation of planning and safety documents.
  • Review subcontractor invoices and evaluate subcontractor performance in accordance with approved plans.
  • Position will require travel and onsite work supporting projects in various US states, including but not limited to: AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, MD, MO, MS, NM, OK, VA.
  • Potential travel to other sites within the US to support environmental investigations or cleanup efforts (travel expenses compensated).

Requirements

Required Experience and Skills

  • Must be able respond to hotline calls, which may be required on weekends, after hours, or on holidays as needed to support the 24-hour hotline for Fairchild Air Force Base, WA project, to document and assess issues, and to coordinate and develop a follow-up plan of action with the Project Manager and government client.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a similar role.
  • Strong commitment to site safety and adherence to safety plans.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Organizational skills and ability to plan and manage multiple tasks simultaneously (good time management skills).
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite software (including Outlook, Word, and Excel).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to execute multiple assignments at various locations, providing a consistently high level of quality and accuracy.
  • Professional demeanor with a positive, solution-seeking attitude and personal responsibility.
  • Ability to self-manage, take direction, and proactively run with tasks.
  • Prior experience working in environmental restoration business.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and physical ability to lift at least 30 pounds (required for environmental sample collection and shipping).
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clear and satisfactory driving record.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science (geology, chemistry, biology, ecology, natural resources) or engineering (civil, environmental, chemical) from an accredited institution.
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training with current annual 8-hour update is a plus; training may be provided for otherwise qualified applicants as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must reside in or near Spokane, Washington area and/or be willing and able to travel to visit job sites, attend client meetings, etc.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and while working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds as needed.

Pay Range

The projected annual salary range for this position in Colorado or Washington is $60,000 - $70,000. Please note that the salary information listed is a good faith estimate for this position and a general guideline only. There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, education, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, as well as business considerations and contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position.
