Job Description
The Business Continuity Specialist reports directly to the Director of Emergency Management & Business Continuity. The position is responsible for conducting business continuity planning for Syracuse University as an enterprise, assisting Syracuse University divisions and departments in crafting plans at the local level, developing and conducting business continuity exercises accordingly to increase the University’s resiliency and recover from an incident more efficiently, managing database(s) to ensure data is up-to-date, and assisting with accreditation efforts of Campus Safety and Emergency Management Services.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Management, Public Administration, or related field preferred.
  • One year work experience in emergency management and business continuity, higher-education, or related field preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Demonstrated understanding of all phases of emergency management.
  • Must possess an insatiable and perpetual curiosity that drives the individual to continually improve and innovate.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously; proficient with establishing priorities that are aligned with risk and urgency.
  • Ability to collaborate and coordinate with key stakeholders across the university and communicate effectively with team members at all levels of the organization.
  • Highly motivated, positive self-starter able to operate with limited supervision in a small team environment.
  • Ability to use good judgment and discretion in potentially stressful environment.
  • Associate Business Continuity Professional (ABCP), preferred qualifications (Skills and Knowledge):
  • Master’s Degree in Emergency Management, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Completion of FEMA HSEEP (E0146/L0146) and Exercise Design (G-139) courses.
  • Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP) or Certificate of the Business Continuity Institute (CBCI).
Responsibilities
  • Conduct business continuity planning, as well as managing and updating plans (at least annually or after a major incident).
  • Develop and conduct business continuity exercises with the emergency management and business continuity program’s stakeholders.
  • Develop After Action Report (AAR) after exercises and/or incidents and track Improvements Plan to ensure completion.
  • Conduct training with stakeholders in the use of the program’s primary incident management & business continuity software.
  • Manage the program’s incident management & business continuity software as well as innovating new solutions.
  • Participate in project meetings and coordination, special events staffing. In the event of an emergency with impacts to University’s critical functions, assist departments with the activation and implementation of business continuity plans.
  • Assist other Divisions, Departments, Units within Campus Safety and Emergency Management Services in crafting social media messaging for internal and external stakeholders related to business continuity plans and personal continuity plans.
  • Develop and manage Campus Safety and Emergency Management Services internship program for students who are interested in the field of business continuity.
  • Increase program’s outreach to stakeholders by re-designing the website and communication toolkits.
  • Other duties as assigned.
