Job Summary:

As a Physician Billing and Coding Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring that healthcare providers receive accurate and timely reimbursement for their services. Your primary responsibility will be to code accurately and bill for medical procedures and services rendered by physicians, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and insurance requirements. You will collaborate closely with healthcare professionals, insurance companies, and administrative staff to facilitate the revenue cycle process. This position handles the back-office function of billing, recording payments received by mail or wired and following up on outstanding accounts receivables. Presence in home office twice a week in Scripps Ranch/San Diego.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Medical Coding:

• Assign accurate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to diagnose and document medical services.
• Review medical records, operative reports, and other relevant documentation to extract necessary information for coding.

Billing:

• Prepare and submit claims to insurance companies, government healthcare programs, and patients.
• Ensuring all necessary authorizations and referrals are in place.
• Review and correct coding errors and discrepancies to maximize reimbursement.

Revenue Cycle Management:

• Monitor and follow up on outstanding claims, denials, and appeals.
• Collaborate with billing team members and healthcare providers to resolve billing and coding issues.
• Stay updated on industry changes, regulations, and insurance policies affecting billing and coding practices.

Compliance and Documentation:

• Ensure compliance with HIPAA and other healthcare regulations in all coding and billing activities.
• Maintain accurate and organized records of patient information, coding, and billing processes.

Customer Service:

• Assist patients with inquiries related to billing statements, insurance claims, and payment options.
• Provide excellent customer service and address patient concerns professionally and promptly.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent; associate's degree in medical billing and coding preferred.
• Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) and billing software.
• Attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Certifications and Other Requirements

• Certification in Medical Coding (CPC, CCS, or equivalent) is highly desirable.
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
• Knowledge of insurance claims processes and reimbursement guidelines.
• Proven experience in medical billing and coding within a healthcare setting.
• Wound care billing is highly desirable.
