Associate Operating Room Assistant - Operating Room/Ambulatory Surgery @ Swedish First Hill

Full Time (40 Hour Week)

Variable Shift

8 Hour Shift

The Associate Operating Room Assistant is an entry-level position learning the basic function and rationale of the surgical department. The Associate Operating Room Assistant is a member of the surgical team who, under direction, assists the surgical staff with patient care including transportation, supplies, equipment, instruments and care of the environment. The Associate Operating Room Assistant work under guidance of the PCA II, PCA III, Surgical Technologist, Facilitator and RN and the direction of the Surgical Support Supervisor/Nurse Manager. Functions as a collaborative and participative member of an interdisciplinary team, consistent with the mission, vision and values of the Surgical Services department and Swedish Medical Center.

  • Works under supervision of the RN to provide care and service to patients and their families. Receives direction from the RN for delegation of tasks. Adheres to emergency policies and procedures associated with patient care.

  • Transfer of patients into and out of transport vehicle (wheelchair, stretcher, bed). Transports patients between pre/post-op patient care areas and discharge destinations.

  • Performs transport duties in a courteous, polite and professional manner within prescribed time constraints. Assists with positioning patient and directs patient requests to appropriate staff members.

  • Appropriately communicates and documents all daily activities and care provided to patient. Communicates and documents unusual and complex issues and changes in patient condition in a timely manner. Communicates and documents such actions accurately and legibly.

  • Provides patient care as directed by team RN and within scope of practice. Duties performed may include, but are not limited to: making, changing and cleaning beds, stretchers and recliners; assisting with ADL’s, vital signs, urinary catheter care and removal, Intake and Output’s, ambulation assistance, assisting patients to the bathroom, assisting patients with using a bedpan, assisting with pericare, assisting the patient with feeding and performing chemstrip functions.

  • Maintains patient right to privacy. Respects the rights of the patient, family and other caregivers. Handles all patient information as confidential.

  • Demonstrates flexibility to meet patient care goals. Recognizes and communicates the need for assistance with assigned workloads. Seeks help with problem solving when needed. Respond appropriately and timely to unit and patient alarms.

  • Communicates appropriate and relevant information and feedback clearly to the appropriate person, while demonstrating respect for the ideas, opinions and feelings of others. Examples: informs appropriate departments about delays and communicates to patients/families transport destination and transport times.

  • Answers the unit telephone and patient call system in a timely, courteous and professional fashion.

  • Collaborates with nurse and other team members to organize and prioritize functions necessary for patient admission, care delivery and discharge.

  • Performs appropriate tasks before and after each patient movement to ensure equipment readiness; including cleaning of transport vehicle and making up stretchers with pillows as appropriate.

  • Responsible for restocking and charging of supplies after use, maintains appropriate core stocking levels, works with manager or designee to improve unit and individual routines to assure adequate room supply without excess or depletion. Notifies nurse manager and/or designee and makes recommendation for par level adjustments.

  • Works collaboratively to manage the use of supplies as directed, and charges for supplies used.

  • Responsible to set up and maintain the neatness of patient areas. Clean equipment as directed.

  • Maintains quality control logs such as for urine dip sticks, glucose controls, temperature log-book, and medication refrigerator temperatures.

  • Assists with patient admission, discharge, transfer and associated documentation as appropriate to peri-op unit.

  • Follows established guidelines in emergency situations, infection control and all safety issues. Receives direction from managers or designee or patient care providers.

  • Identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement, assuming responsibility for the effect of his/her behavior and communication on others. Demonstrates a positive, team-centered attitude.

  • Provides appropriate assistance in the orientation and training of new Transporter/NAC’s. Establishes annual goals in concert with manager for growth and development.

  • Actively participates in unit, department and system-wide educational activities including Quality Improvement programs as appropriate.

  • Competently performs assigned technical skills (i.e. bladder scans for PVR’s, specimen collection and testing, traction and trapeze equipment setup, glucose monitoring, Oxygen Saturation, printing monitor strips, etc.).

  • Maintains a professional appearance in the course of performing duties.

  • Able to perform the role of Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) as directed, by ensuring patient safety, taking responsibility for the environment of care and communicating with RN/charge RN/designee of changes to patient condition in a timely manner. Duties include performing patient care activities, and safety checks that align with system standard of care. Aligns patient safety, self-safety and environmental safety as equally important for best outcomes.

  • Performs other duties as assigned to insure effectiveness of care delivery and unit function

Required qualifications:

  • Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a healthcare environment.
