POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs, interprets and evaluates routine and complex diagnostic procedures applying the principles, theories and techniques of Medical laboratory sciences.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Science program.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

MLS or MLT employees are required to obtain ASCP (or equivalent) certification within the first year of employment. Extensions to obtain certification may be allowed at the discretion of the Department Director if the employee is in good standing within the organization. Certification maintenance must be maintained as required by certifying agency.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Knowledge of current medical terminology and full range of laboratory tests and equipment. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with medical staff, patients and staff. Strong problem-solving abilities. Successful completion of annual clinical, age and job specific competencies and skill verification tools required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Performs analysis on laboratory specimens following standard protocol and reports results and findings in a timely fashion.

1. Operates, calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots laboratory instruments following policy and procedures or manufacturer’s published specifications.

1. Performs quality control and proficiency testing and accurately documents according to established guidelines.

1. Assists in orientation and education of medical laboratory science students and new employees.

1. Researches and develops new procedures or instruments and participates in special projects as assigned.

1. Maintains and utilizes supplies and reagents within established budgetary parameters.

1. Performs phlebotomy and EKG tasks based on patient volume.

1. Maintains the functions of a General Supervisor as defined under CLIA guidelines and as delegated by the Laboratory Medical Director.
