Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Phlebotomist acts independently to perform a variety of technical procedures involved in the procurement, processing and evaluation of patient specimens for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

  • Collect, receive and process specimens as required by respective laboratory area procedures and protocols.
  • Demonstrates compliance with state, federal/CLIA and accrediting body standards in regard to collection, labeling, processing and testing of laboratory specimens.
  • Maintains proper post analytical reporting for review by lab manager and caregivers.
  • Assures patient and employee safety through adherence to Universal Precautions and hospital infection control policies.
  • Maintain competency in waived and point of care testing.
  • Performs clerical duties to assist the laboratory; this includes distribution of reports.
  • Reviews current procedures annually.
  • Participates in lab inspections and works with inspectors as needed.
  • Performs and verifies adequate quality control prior to patient testing and reporting of results.
  • Assure remedial action is taken and documented whenever test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Maintains sufficient inventory of supplies and equipment needed for performance of duties.
  • Utilize various laboratory and hospital information systems and software.
  • Utilizes concepts of age/developmental stages in interactions with patients and families.
  • Maintains positive working relationships and fosters cooperative work environment.
  • Displays honesty and mutual respect when communicating with peers and other departments, uses appropriate chain of command.
  • Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day-to-day activities of the position.
  • Complies with National Patient Safety Goals outlined for Laboratory Services
  • Demonstrates the spirit of the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital through words and actions and implements them into departmental processes, programs, and the working environment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties in this job classification

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • A certificate in phlebotomy from a nationally accredited organization such as certification through the National Phlebotomy Association, American Society for Clinical Pathology or other nationally recognized agency.
  • Minimum of a 100 blood draws, may be achieved through clinical rotation
  • Current BLS certification;
  • Effective communication skills; both orally and written.
  • Computer skills needed.
  • Ability to work with others within a team to ensure quality patient care.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
