Job Description:

The Dean of Admissions serves as the senior enrollment officer for the SUNY Maritime College. The Dean develops and implements marketing and recruitment strategies to achieve enrollment goals for undergraduate and graduate students, both campus-based and online. The Dean leads the Admissions staff, in accordance with the College mission, to recruit students who will excel within and beyond our distinctively unique college environment. The Dean fosters a "recruit to retain and graduate" admission philosophy. The Dean also represents the Admissions Office to internal and external constituencies and instills confidence in the policies, practices, and procedures for recruitment and admissions.

Description of duties:

  • Primary responsibilities include providing input to the College's decision-making process concerning the development of admission policy and the admission process
  • Develops collaborative relationships with internal and external constituents
  • Plans, develops, implements, markets, and evaluates recruitment, marketing, and Admissions programs and services for prospective students and parents
  • Supervises, mentors, and motivates professional, support, and student staff to meet and exceed enrollment goals
  • Exhibits excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications, and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritize work
  • Displays a high level of initiative and motivation to achieve enrollment goals
  • Understands and commits to achieving the College's mission and goals
  • Is a proactive, visionary leader with a willingness to explore and implement "best practices" for the Admissions Office.
  • Maintains close liaison with academic staff and campus partners in order to keep the admission office apprised of:
  1. current program and course offerings
  2. applicability of transfer credits
  3. advanced placement credits, and
  4. proficiency examination scores
  5. requirements for Regimental track cadets
  6. STCW recency requirements for re-admitted students
  • Maintains liaison with high school and regional community college guidance counselors directly and through professional associations
  • Oversees the scheduling of off-campus visits by admission staff who explain College programs, entrance requirements and financial requirements, and provides assistance to prospective students and others
  • Supervises admissions advising, applications processing, and records
  • Leads and/or supports preparation and distribution of the college catalog and other admissions literature
  • Actively works to expand market outreach and diversify both applicant pool and accessions, and ensures steady enrollment goals, while maintaining outstanding academic standards
  • Directs the giving of notice as to acceptance or non-acceptance and maintains waiting lists as appropriate
  • Works closely with the student financial aid office and student affairs staff to assure complete service to newly admitted students
  • Provides welcoming services to potential students and families who wish to learn more about the campus
  • Supports underway training evolutions during sea term operations and facilitates/provides admissions "open houses" while in various ports of call
  • Administers College's Placement Exams
  • Creates Admissions Rubric(s) to identify best candidates
  • Leads an Admissions Application Review Board composed of faculty and administrators intended to admit the best possible students
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent preferred in education, management or marketing
  • Seven years of demonstrated leadership required in training or education-related fields or recruiting or ROTC-related experience
  • Five to seven years of progressive management and leadership experience in college admission preferred; previous experience in higher education
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • Excellent data analysis ability
  • Knowledge of technical and transfer programs and higher education principles
  • Knowledge of enrollment management theory
  • Demonstrated expertise in establishing MOEs and MOP
  • Experience in developing and implementing successful marketing and recruitment strategies, as well as fundraising
  • Experience with communications for prospective students
  • The understanding of the uniqueness of SUNY Maritime College

Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: This is a full-time calendar year appointment Management/Confidential unclassified position which serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority. The anticipated salary range for the position is $115,000 to $130,000 annually with an outstanding benefits package (for additional information, please see the Management Confidential Unclassified Benefits Summary. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications to commence immediately and conclude when the position is filled.

Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year appointment UUP Position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
