Sunrise Engineering is currently initiating a search for a full-time Senior Planner to support our growing organization. This Full Time position has the option to work from our Logan, Ogden or Midvale, Utah office during our business hours, Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 5:00PM.

A Day in the Life of a Senior Planner

This position will primarily be tasked with general planning duties including research and data collection, zoning, ordinance review, long-range planning, presentations, and analysis for client-based community development studies. Other duties will include report writing, document preparation, survey development, and participation in remote and on-site community engagement activities such as public meetings and stakeholder interviews.

A sample of typical tasks include:

  • Collect and present a variety of statistical data from the U.S. Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and other sources to identify and describe demographic, housing, and economic trends for client jurisdictions.
  • Use Microsoft Office to create production-quality research documents, tables, charts, and graphs.
  • Produce narratives describing research findings regarding population, housing, transportation, economics, education, and other community attributes.
  • Compile narratives written by Sunrise team members to develop draft client deliverables.
  • Create recommendations for zoning, policies, ordinances, and development.
  • Advise communities on best planning practices and land use issues
  • Assist in gathering community input from diverse community groups by developing public surveys, hosting community meetings, and conducting stakeholder interviews.
  • Assist with public meetings and small group planning exercises. Prepare publicity materials for community meetings.
  • Organize interview and public meeting notes; analyze results of community engagement processes to identify themes and summarize input.
  • Track project progress completion and budget.
  • Present in public meetings to planning commissions, city councils, and county commissions.
  • Assist communities in conducting plan review.
  • Other duties as assigned

How to Succeed

Applicants should hold at least an undergraduate degree in Urban Planning, Public Policy, Public Administration, Sociology, or a related field. Strong writing skills are essential. AICP preferred. 4 years in either public or private sector planning, specifically in preparing General Plans and code and ordinance updates.

Other desired qualifications include:
• Experience collecting and organizing demographic, housing, transportation, and economic data 
• Exposure to current planning issues and trends.
• Ability to read and interpret laws, ordinances, and zoning codes.
• Strong quantitative analysis and data visualization/presentation skills.
• Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Experience/interest in public surveying and other community engagement techniques.
• High level of professionalism and attention to detail.
• Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines for multiple simultaneous projects.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
• Self-motivated and collaborative team member.
