Job Description: Welding/Fabrication Supervisor
Department: Production
Reports To: Production Manager
Position Summary
Summit Body has served the commercial truck and transportation industry in the Pacific Northwest for over 35 years building and upfitting dry vans, flatbeds and refrigerated vans. In 2021, Summit acquired a Seattle-area service center, which repairs and refinishes all makes and models of medium, heavy duty, specialty, and fleet vehicles.
Our Production Supervisor develops and monitors the daily production schedule to ensure customer promised delivery dates are achieved. Working closely with the Production Manager, and the Production Coordinators, the Production Supervisor is accountable for the product final inspection, meeting the Company’s production labor budget plan, and on-time delivery, capacity, safety, productivity, scrap, and product quality goals. This position is responsible for understanding the Value Stream and supporting the production/fabrication/mounting continuous improvement direction, and development of foremen to solve problems and implement sustainable improvements. This is a critical role to ensuring a quality finished product and the satisfaction on our customers. The ideal candidate is organized, is a strong communicator, and works well with a team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and foster a safe, clean and organized work environment at all times.
- Develop and monitor daily production schedule to meet the customer promised due dates, and optimize production and mountings productivity using established procedures.
- Hire, train, develop, coach, direct and evaluate Production Coordinators, and take timely corrective action as necessary and in accordance with company policy. Counsel Production Coordinators to do the same for production specialists.
- Oversee the skills-based pay-for-performance program for the production staff, and coach Production Coordinators on developing employees’ skills and abilities.
- Perform the final product inspection and ensure product quality standards are met for all phases of manufacture according to the production order and specifications.
- Monitor and analyze production quality, productivity, and production data for trends and improvements. Take corrective action as required and keep management team apprised of status.
- Support Production Coordinators in troubleshooting production problems and implementing sustainable corrective action and process / product improvements.
- Ensure equipment and tools are readily available and in good working order, and preventative maintenance is performed.
- Document and manage Standard Work Instructions (SWI). Be a sounding board and confirm consistency, fairness, and conformance to the SWI and company values.
- Ensure the Value Stream Maps’ integrity, observation data for line balancing, and established standard work is followed.
- Lead production’s continuous improvement efforts towards meeting company goals.
- Chair Safety Committee and ensure proper recordkeeping and employee refresher training is completed.
- Understand all applicable company policies, standards and procedures, communicate to all employees in areas of responsibility, and work with Production Coordinators to ensure compliance.
- Assist the Production Manager with additional tasks as requested.
- Supervise the status of multiple production lines
- Liaison with Production Manager and Sales Coordinator for production schedule
- Review Production Specialists and Production Coordinator timecards, approve and get signatures from employees
Qualifications
- Associate Degree and/or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience in a related metals and assembly manufacturing environment is highly desired.
- Experience with production scheduling; and analyzing and utilizing production data for decisions, corrective actions and improvements.
- Ability to lead, coach and develop employees, and hold them accountable for results. Experience with a skills-based, pay-for-performance program is desired.
- Experience writing Standard Work Instructions (SWI), and communicating and training employees on the SWI.
- Knowledge and application of lean management principles.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure while remaining calm and levelheaded. Humble and compassionate for others’ work challenges.
- Effective oral and written communication skills. Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.
- Intermediate level computer skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Must pass pre-employment drug test and annual random retesting.
- Must have transportation and valid driver’s license.
Work Environment
The factory noise level may require ear protection. The work area has forklift traffic and will occasionally require exposure to wet conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and vibration. Intermittently throughout the day you will be required to go outside in various weather conditions. On occasion there may be a need to lift, carry, push, and pull 75 lbs. Stooping, bending, twisting, climbing ladders and standing for periods of time may occasionally be required.
Work Hours
The Production Supervisor’s routine work hours are Monday through Thursday from 5:45 am to 4:30 pm. The workweek may expand up to 50 hours per week and/or Saturday overtime to meet customer demand.
Compensation
Salary range of $25 - $30 DOE per year commensurate with experience, health/dental/life insurance, paid vacation, 401K, and ESOP participation.
