Engineering Manager leads and is accountable for product engineering efforts during the idea, concept, and feasibility phases as these relate to new product

developments, enhancements, and cost savings initiatives. The Product Engineering Manager is responsible to create design engineering solutions that can be

manufactured to meet cost targets, processes, materials, and meets testing requirements.

What is this role responsible for?

The position is accountable for building and managing a department with responsibilities over product engineering, quality standards and control.

The Product Engineering Manager leads and is accountable for product engineering efforts during the idea as well as assisting the Design & Development group with

the coordination of projects and activities, as well as providing technical support to all departments and customers. To achieve this, the incumbent insures that

budgeting, timing, and implementation are performed in accordance with company standards, and that these activities are performed in the most cost efficient manner

in order to maximise profitability. This person assures a close working relationship with Manufacturing Engineering and the plant and assures involvement throughout

the development processes as well as the entire products lifecycle. The product engineering manager is accountable for maintaining, processing, and administering

changes to existing products, change specials, and any associated bill of material changes that occur due to request internal or external customers.

Specific Accountabilities

1. The product engineering manager is responsible for reviewing, approving and co-ordinating new launch information as provided by design and the new products

group. The product engineering manager must ensure that new launches are introduced as “production friendly” as possible. Also, all routings and work cell

designations must be reflected upon new products.

2. Develop creative and sound engineering solutions to new products (as outlined by the product brief), incorporating the technical advances in manufacturing

processes and materials through a systematic process of prototyping and testing of new parts and assemblies.

3. Ensure that the product design complies with all relevant testing requirements and ensure the design complies with all relevant requirements (BIFMA, CGSB, etc.) and

that these are interpreted and incorporated into the design. Interpret the testing requirements as they apply to the new products and their application.

4. The incumbent is accountable for assisting with manufacturing cost reduction projects. To achieve this the incumbent analyses/reviews existing designs and

recommends areas to reduce expenses/costs while still adhering to Teknion’s and StudioTK quality and safety standards.

5. Responsible to keep Vice President of Design and Development aware of significant issues, changes and progress updates on projects.

6. Check and approve drawings for tooling and fabrication.

7. Own & monitor ECR log to ensure that projects are processed within time frames.

8. Manage database information pertaining to drawing integrity, pricing database, B.O.M., routings, specials information, and ensure that these are reflected in the Price

and Product Guide.

9. Contribute to the development of new processes and tools that improve the concurrent development process.

10. Continue to acquire knowledge of industry trends and standards, manufacturing and material, technology, competitive product and engineering practices.

11. Partake in the design/modification, CAD drafting, prototyping and technical support of special products. Ensure that the special database (Price-It) is maintained

adequately to contain only current and accurate information. Create, document and administer policies and procedures within the special cell to support established

product engineering policies as well as the overall company goals.

12. This incumbent is responsible for insuring that adequate training is implemented, they will ensure that employees be provided with training to improve individual

skill set, productivity, and any course deemed pertinent to product engineering.

Qualifications / Educational Requirements

  • Mechanical Engineering degree
  • Professional Engineer Designation
  • Minimum 8 years engineering experience in a development and manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum 3 years progressive experience in a Product Engineering/Technical Support role.
  • Manufacturing knowledge of processes and materials (ie: stamped steel, molded aluminum, plastic, wood, textiles)
  • Knowledge of Industry standards - ANSI/BIFMA
  • Advance project and time management skills, ability to handle several tasks simultaneously prototype

model making skills, general sketching abilities and word processing.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to work and perform under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficient in 3D solid/surface software. SolidWorks knowledge is a preference.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Ability and willingness to work and learn new skills in a fast-paced team environment.
