About the Role
The Company is seeking a General Counsel (GC) to join its Executive Leadership Team and lead the legal function across a diverse set of non-profit and for-profit entities. The GC will be at the forefront of pivotal decisions, serving as a strategic business partner and trusted advisor, and will be responsible for all legal affairs, including complex commercial and licensing transactions, media rights, government affairs, privacy, intellectual property, FCC regulations, employment, and union matters. This dynamic role requires a leader with a business enterprise focus, who is creative, bold, and inclusive, and who can advance the organization's three-year strategy and digital transformation. The ideal candidate will have a J.D. from an accredited law school, be licensed to practice in the relevant state, and possess at least 15 years of legal experience, preferably in a non-profit or media broadcasting company.Key responsibilities for the GC include managing the entire legal function, serving as the Board secretary, and ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. The role also involves developing and executing policies that align with the organization's business goals and advancing issues of equity, inclusion, diversity, and access. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of strategic and tactical leadership, strong negotiation and communication skills, and experience with governance at the highest level. While prior General Counsel experience is preferred, it is not required, but the candidate should have a background in media law, experience with AI, privacy, and data protection matters, and be familiar with employment law and labor unions. The GC will be a key player in the company's mission to create the future of public media by amplifying voices to inform, include, and inspire.
