Role and Responsibilities:

DRIVERS NEEDED! MUST HAVE CLEAN MOTOR VEHICLE RECORD TO DRIVE!

General Description of Duties: According to the Dept. of Transportation (D.O.T.) and confirmed by contract, worker controls movement of vehicular traffic through construction projects: Discusses traffic plans and type and location of control points with superior. Distributes traffic control signs and markers along site in designated pattern. Directs movement of traffic through site, using sign, hand and flag signals. Warns construction/utility workers when approaching vehicle fails to heed signals to prevent accident and injury to workers. Informs drivers of detour routes through work sites. Records license number of traffic control violators for police/law enforcement. May give hand marker to last driver in line up of one-way traffic.

Essential Functions: Must have strong verbal communication skills, ability to read and write, good eye-hand coordination, and the ability to quickly respond appropriately to unexpected events. Employees need to be able to work without direct supervision. As this job may require long periods of standing and being subjected to adverse weather conditions, it is important that the flagger be in good physical condition. It is essential that the employee have good eyesight (corrected vision if needed) and hearing.

Work Settings/Description of Environmental Hazard Encountered: Highways, city and county roads. Working around moving vehicles on roadways and around moving heavy equipment at road construction site. Must be able to work in various weather conditions i.e. heat, rain, snow etc.

Machine, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids: Position requires the use of stop/slow paddle, hard-hat, reflective vest, rain gear, safety cones, safety signs, radio and vehicle.

Physical Requirements of Job Tasks:

  • Constantly 10 pounds maximum; occasionally 40 pounds maximum
  • Seeking supervisors and Experienced Personnel. (Opportunity to move to other states)
  • Constant standing throughout the shift. Position may require standing for periods greater than two hours at a time, for a total of greater than eight hours.
  • Occasional walking throughout shift to remain alert and to move with machinery involved in work site project. Will periodically walk to put down and pick up safety cones and signs.
  • Occasional sitting for brief periods in vehicles when moving from one location to another. No sitting permitted when performing flagging.
  • Constant handling of 24" aluminum paddle with PVC pipe weighing 4-5 lbs. Lift/carry rubber safety cones, weighing 7-8 lbs each, intermittently throughout shift (load may be broken down by employee). Set-up and take down traffic control signs (maximum 20 lbs.) and stands (maximum 40 lbs.) up to 10 times per shift.
  • Constant reaching with one hand/arm to steady stop/slow paddle out in front of body. Constant reaching out in front of body with one arm to motion traffic. Constant raising and lowering paddle to full extension of arm. Position allows worker to alternate hands/arms at their discretion.
  • Occasional stooping/bending when putting down and picking up safety cones, about 10 times per shift.
  • Frequent twisting of wrist/forearm to turn stop/slow paddle from side to side. Position allows worker to alternate hands/arms at their discretion.
  • Constant grasping of stop/slow paddle one-handed (may alternate hands at own discretion).
  • Occasional use of foot pedals to operate vehicle within the worksite

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age, preferred 21
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Valid State Identification, Preferred Driver’s License with a “clean” driving record (no single DUI in the last 3 years and no multiple DUIs within the last 7 years)

Preferred Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and 2 years’ experience in Traffic Control
  • Employees must have a valid Flagger Certification card (Training will be provided if needed)
  • Employees must have a reliable form of communication (iphone, android, etc.)
  • Will help interested person obtain flagger certification, reimbursed by company.

Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week

  • Overtime
  • Weekends as needed
