State of West Virginia is Hiring a Tax Audit Clerk - Department of Revenue, Tax Division - Kanawha County Near Kanawha, WV

Nature of Work

The West Virginia State Tax Division is seeking a candidate who will primarily examine and audit tax returns and other related documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with WV law. The incumbent will show moderate knowledge of state tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements. Regular tasks include: verifying the accuracy of return filings utilizing well established rules and procedures; corresponding and communicating with taxpayers and their representatives in writing or on the phone regarding issues and questions related to tax filings; communicating with auditors, attorneys, and other agency employees regarding issues related to tax filings engaging in tax discovery and desk audit programs resulting in assessment of tax or denial of refunds claims; utilizing the integrated tax system to accomplish everyday tasks along with other office computer applications; maintaining strict confidentiality with regard to taxpayer information. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated; have good written and oral communication skills; and, preferably, familiarity with Microsoft Office applications such as Excel; familiarity with Google applications such a Docs, Sheets and Gmail; a history of tax auditing or tax accounting experience or expertise sufficient to handle basic desk auditing. Performs related work as required. Final candidates are subject to reference verification, a full criminal history evaluation, and a tax compliance check.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Associate degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree. The qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified as permanent.
OR
Substitution: Two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division OR two (2) years of experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support may be substituted for the required training.
AND
Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent paid part-time experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support, OR two (2) years of experience at the State Tax Division.
Promotional Only: Experience as a Tax Audit Clerk Trainee may substitute at the rate of one (1) year substituting for two (2) years of the above required experience.
