The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Supervisor to provide strategic leadership and supervise Roadway Maintenance crews, specialty groups, and various assigned areas. This critical role supports WSDOT's mission of providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options while fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment. Responsibilities include planning, directing, and supervising maintenance activities, providing snow and ice support, and overseeing specialty programs such as rest area management and NPDES permit compliance. What to Expect
This position requires responding to emergencies outside of your scheduled hours, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays. You must report to your assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call and be able to work on standby. Please note that responding to non-scheduled call-out emergencies may be required, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Supervisor will:
  • Oversee day-to-day highway maintenance operations, including inspecting for safety and compliance with standards.
  • Plan, budget, assign, and supervise the work of maintenance employees, monitor performance, and conduct appraisals.
  • Guide and direct staff to accomplish routine and special maintenance projects while ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Communicate with the public, crew, and other WSDOT personnel regarding work assignments and concerns.
  • Coordinate work, personnel, materials, and equipment with other WSDOT area supervisors and external agencies.
  • Plan work assignments effectively and communicate them clearly to assigned staff.
  • Perform various maintenance tasks such as pavement application and repair, drainage maintenance, sign installation, and vegetation management.
  • Design and set up traffic control for operations according to departmental and MUTCD standards.
  • Respond to emergency situations, coordinating response efforts and ensuring safety for personnel and the public.
  • Provide winter snow and ice management, develop and implement mitigation plans, and supervise control work.
  • Maintain and repair tools and equipment, including utilizing iPads and computers for record-keeping and troubleshooting.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in planning and carrying out traffic control plans, including detours on large freeway systems.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 3 or equivalent roadway maintenance, construction, or other closely related work experience, including heavy equipment operation. OR One-year experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 4 or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
  • Ability to always conduct themselves in a professional manner, exhibiting strong integrity and personal accountability.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally using two-way radio, cell phones, MS Teams, and emails.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and hours outside a normal assigned shift to direct and accomplish work.
  • Valid Washington Class A CDL and medical card with endorsement N and manual transmission, and without air brake restrictions.
  • The ability to operate Class A, B, and C equipment w/current technology safely and professionally in highway maintenance operations.
  • Ability to conduct field visits in an outdoor work environment adjacent to live traffic in all weather conditions. Hazards include rough terrain and working at heights above 25 feet. Field visits may involve exposure to hazardous materials, and the employee must be able to manipulate up to 50 pounds safely.
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:
  • Five (5) years of experience leading Maintenance personnel in highway maintenance.
  • Ability to speak in front of groups of people to address issues or provide information about emerging work situations.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience training others on various pieces of equipment used to perform highway maintenance.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License
  • Backflow Prevention Tester Certification
  • Crane Certification
  • Leadership training
  • Computer Skills

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. 
  • The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 10% premium for Highway Maintenance Supervisor positions located in Kent, WA, King County. 
  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • The work schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. However, you may be required to respond to emergencies outside of your scheduled hours, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays. You must be able to report to your assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call and be able to work on standby. Please note that responding to non-scheduled call-out emergencies may be required, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
