The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position for the Okanogan area. this journey-level position is a member of the regional maintenance organization. Operating a wide variety of highway equipment and tools, this position is responsible for maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position performs a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Perform snow and ice removal, which includes operating dump trucks and sanders, as well has hauling sand and gravel.
  • Design and set-up of traffic control, which includes establishing temporary work zones, mobile work operations and using traffic control devices.
  • Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
  • Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
  • Sign maintenance and repair.
  • Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Removal of litter, animal remains and debris.
  • Effectively use radio, phone, computers, and electronic devices to communicate and document data.
  • Negotiate rough and steep surfaces during the performance of job tasks.
  • Perform snow and ice removal, which includes operating dump trucks and sanders, as well has hauling sand and gravel.
  • Respond to call out emergency’s day, night, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Qualifications
This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at the lower level (HMW1 depending on qualifications), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
To be considered for the highest level(HMW1) you must also have:
  • A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must have N (tanker) endorsement and current medical card obtained prior to employment. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
  • One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, farming, landscaping, general construction, or related experience.
  • Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
  • The ability to lift and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
To be considered for the highest level (HMW2) you must also have:
  • A Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B without airbrake restrictions. Must have N (tanker) endorsement and current medical card obtained prior to employment. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring, WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement.
  • At least two (2) years of experience performing roadway maintenance, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, over the road or other truck driving, farming, landscaping, general construction, or related experience.
  • Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with the ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
  • The ability to lift and transport materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Washington Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction.
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License.
  • Experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
Important Notes
  • Must be able to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
