The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seekinga hardworking and motivated individual to fill the role of an Equipment Technician 3. Under the supervision of the Equipment Technician Supervisor in the Southwest Region (SWR) Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF) organization, this position is responsible for performing journey-level inspection, troubleshoot, diagnoses, service, and making major and minor mechanical repairs on all types of equipment used in highway maintenance. SWR TEF provides well maintained vehicles and equipment to customers who in turn may accomplish their services to the public in a safe, efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner.
What to Expect
The typical schedule is Monday-Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician 3 will:

  • Perform blacksmith welding repairs to dump trucks/mid size fleet and heavy equipment.
  • Perform major and minor metal fabrication using a variety of welding, and burning equipment and techniques.
  • Design and install electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical equipment control systems.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and make needed repairs to equipment, such as: vehicles over 15,000 GVW, specialty trucks, power shovels, graders, backhoes, and all other state-owned equipment used in highway maintenance and engineering.
  • Utilize digital MultiMeter and scanning tools to diagnose and repair computer-controlled fuel systems (both diesel and gas), steering and suspension systems, and hydraulic and air brake systems.
  • Design, diagnose, repair, and install hydraulic systems.
  • Operate shop equipment; perform repair to shop and shop tools; road test vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform PM on all WSDOT equipment and vehicles to detect and repair safety items on equipment to reduce field down time and to extend the service life of equipment.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey level mechanic. Note: Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding may substitute year for year for up to two years of experience.
OR
  • One (1) year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment.
OR
  • Journey-level standing as a heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship.
OR
  • Journey-level standing as recognized by a labor union.
In addition to:
  • Experience being committed to safety including proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to safely move, place, and manipulate objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to traverse slopes and declines, and perform work in a confined environment.
  • Work alternate and emergency shifts as situations dictate.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed.
  • Some night work and occasional standby and call-back may be required.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
  • A valid Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
  • Experience using Fleet Equipment Management System (FEMS) and Microsoft Office Suite programs including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Experience reading and understanding equipment manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in automotive or light/heavy equipment repair.
  • Two (2) year degree in Automotive Technology or Diesel Technology.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in the automotive repair industry.
  • Experience operating shop tools such as welders, drill presses, grinders, presses, hoists, air tools, and jacks.

  • The salary listed for this position also includes the legislative approved 20% Assignment Pay for heavy equipment mechanics.
