Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.
The Opportunity
WSDOT has an exciting opportunity for highly experienced engineers to assist in managing teams in the development and administration of highway construction projects. The Assistant Project Engineer will serve as the Project Engineer in their absence, supervising the engineering and administration of design and construction projects. These positions may be assigned the responsibility to manage the development of projects through the planning, scoping, design, contract preparation, construction administration, and project closeout phases. These positions effectively and efficiently implement region and statewide procedures and processes to meet the objectives and performance measures of the Region Construction Program and established biennial commitments.
What to Expect
It is the responsibility of this individual to ensure all assigned projects are managed according to WSDOT policy; delivered on or before scheduled due dates; within or under budgeted amounts; and are constructible, maintainable, and cost effective for all stake holders and customers.

  • Manage, lead, and organize the North Central Region’s design/plans preparation processes and the delivery and administration of highway construction projects in the North Central Region.
  • Responsible for certifying, by use of their Professional Engineer's stamp, that all WSDOT standards and policies were followed in the development of all design documents, plans, and specifications that were produced in the organization and any changes executed in the administration of construction projects.
  • Strategically plan the budget, schedule, and workforce necessary to deliver highway construction projects. Assist in the management of an office of professional and technical engineers, including summer interns, temporary employees, and engineering consultants.
  • Ensure that all assigned projects are managed in accordance with WSDOT policy and procedures to meet the desired scope, schedule, budget, and documentation for the project. Ensure the projects are delivered in an environmentally responsible manner consistent with applicable laws.
  • Partner with outside agencies/consultants/public entities and internal departments regarding what provisions will be addressed in the project development process for each project and executing the resulting requirements in construction contracts.
  • Report on the status of assigned projects to WSDOT Regional and Statewide Executive management to support and improve the accountability of WSDOT.
  • Coordinate input and resolve conflicts with internal organizations, personnel, outside agencies, consultants, and the public.
  • Responsible for creating success by working in partnership with staff, citizens, media, elected officials, contractors, and outside agencies to plan, build, maintain and operate a safe and efficient transportation system.
  • Support WSDOT North Central Region in coordinating the project development process with HQ, FHWA, other regions, support organizations, consultants, project engineering offices, Federal, State, and Local agencies.
  • Consider and implement WSDOT’s Strategic Plan elements, including but not limited to promoting inclusion in the workforce and community, developing workforce capabilities, practical solutions.
  • Consider and implement sustainable transportation practices, including but limited to environmental stewardship, energy consumption, plans, initiatives, and other business practices when maintaining, operating, or improving the transportation system.
  • Consider and implement personal, coworker, and public safety as first and foremost objective during the planning and performance of all activities in connection with work assignments.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Professional Civil Engineer’s License (License holders from other states will be expected to obtain a WA State PE license with six months of appointment.)
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License.
Knowledge of:
  • Highway design and plan, specification, and estimate preparation.
  • Highway construction and construction practices.
  • Surveying and surveying practices.
  • The principles of management.
  • Transportation issues and transportation design.
  • Environmental laws, regulations, and issues.
  • Programming and budget procedures.
  • Legislative processes.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Communicate effectively, develop, and implement long-term plans: facilitate agreement between competing interests; and design and deliver highway construction contracts.
  • Work with diverse groups and individuals within WSDOT and with various outside agencies and groups in order to complete assigned projects and meet the department's goals project requirements.
  • Apply Washington State Department of Transportation's (WSDOT) highway engineering practices technical procedures and management processes.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
