The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill Permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions in our South-Central Region, Area 2 Yakim, WA vicinity. There are three (3) Section Shops looking to fill vacancies at East Selah, Toppenish and Rimrock (near Naches, WA). The selected candidates will be required to perform highway and roadside maintenance work. These positions are responsible for their own personal safety and safety of other crew members, while performing maintenance work and by accomplishing assigned tasks, such as snow & ice control, repairing damage to guardrail and signs, patching potholes, clearing brush and trees. You will also maintain highway drainage, and performing traffic control, the persons in these positions will contribute to the ability of the traveling public to travel safely and efficiently over state highways.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair.
  • Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
  • Erosion and slide repair.
  • Sign maintenance and repair.
  • Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Danger tree removal; vegetation management, including pesticide application.
  • Facility and rest area maintenance.
  • Establish, maintain, and repair landscaped areas.
  • Remove litter on state right-of-way.
  • Remove animals remains and debris from roadways.
  • Track, document, and report daily work activities.
  • Account for inventory and inventories highway section.
  • Design and set-up traffic control, which includes manually flagging traffic or signing for lane closures and operating attenuator/buffer truck.
  • Snow and ice control.
Qualifications
This is a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 (HMW2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at the lower level (HMW1 depending on qualifications), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
To be considered for the HMW 2 level:
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without airbrakes restriction
  • One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, farming, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, or related experience.
To be considered for the HMW 1 level:
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with endorsement N and without airbrakes restriction, and ability to obtain Class A within 12 months of hire.
  • One (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, farming, roadway construction, heavy equipment operation, or related experience.
Required for both levels:
  • Valid medical card.
  • First Aid Certificate within six (6) months of hire.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment used in road maintenance.
  • Perform all duties when assigned to any shift.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per M54-44 or MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtain Flagger Certification within six (6) months.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to operate a computer, iPad and other electronic equipment for maintenance accountability, timekeeping and checking emails.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Knowledge of state highways, roadsides, and right of ways of the surrounding area.
  • Understand and experience working with public/private owned fleet & rental equipment.
