This position includes a signing bonus in the amount of $3,000 for full-time new hires in the classification of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who have not received a retention bonus previously. Eligible full-time new hires will receive $1,500 upon hire and an additional $1,500 upon completion of the probationary period. A prorated bonus will be earned for part-time positions.

The Arlington County Department of Human Services is currently recruiting for a Nurse Practitioner position within its Psychiatric Services Bureau in the The organization is a recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, dynamic behavioral healthcare agency, providing critical services to Arlington County residents.

The individual selected for this position will support the Psychiatric Services outpatient services team, and participate on an inter-disciplinary team including psychiatrists, public health nurses, pharmacy, staff, and administrative staff to provide services, collaborate with external providers, and incorporate health and wellness needs into the overall plan of care of client's served.
Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting psychiatric assessments of clients;
  • Ongoing psychiatric management, including psychopharmacological treatment, psychotherapeutic support, and crisis intervention in collaboration with the treatment team and clinical supervisors;
  • Assuring comprehensive healthcare needs are identified and treated;
  • Educating clients about their illness and providing health management information and techniques;
  • Documenting clinical care and services provided; and
  • Providing backup psychiatric provider coverage as needed, mainly consisting of after-hours telephone call responsibilities and back-up to crisis stabilization program.
The successful candidate will have proven experience with psychopharmacologic management of individuals who have chronic mental illness and/or dual diagnosed. The candidate must be able to work independently, have effective communication skills, and work well with an interdisciplinary team.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a college or university program accredited by the American Nurses' Association;
  • A Master's Degree in Psychiatric Nursing, which required a clinical mental health practicum prior to graduation involving diagnostic and treatment services; and
  • Must be certified or eligible for certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Virginia.
Substitution: A directly related higher level clinical degree (Doctorate) may substitute for the Master's Degree education requirement.
Desirables: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:
  • A Minimum of one year clinical experience as a certified Advanced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner that includes providing direct psychiatric treatment including prescribing psychiatric medication to individuals with serious mental illness in an inpatient or outpatient psychiatric treatment facility;
  • Outpatient crisis services or crisis unit such as a hospital emergency department;
  • Working in an acute inpatient psychiatric unit; and/or
  • Current healthcare provider CPR certification from the American Heart Association.
Special Requirements

Must be certified or eligible for certification as an Advanced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The Board of Nursing and the Board of Medicine may issue certification by endorsement to an applicant who has been certified as a Nurse Practitioner by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory.
Must be licensed or eligible for license by endorsement to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in Virginia. The Board of Nursing may issue a license by endorsement to an applicant who has been licensed as a professional nurse by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory.
Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Must have DEA prescriptive authority.
Must complete pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check.
Working Conditions:
  • The worker must be available to work after hours and in emergency situations.
  • Work is performed as part of a 24/7 operation and the worker must be available to work shifts as necessary.
  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of force greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
Employment restrictions: To ensure that dual relationships are avoided and that employees who are also clients do not relate to their service provider as co-professionals, employees will not be hired by the County to provide or support services to the team or program in which they are current clients:
  • You cannot concurrently receive behavioral health services from Arlington County Community Service Board (CSB) programs while employed in an Arlington County CSB program (exception Crisis Intervention services).
  • At least 24 months must have passed between receipt of CSB services from Arlington County and employment in an Arlington County CSB program.
Additional Information

Work hours: A flexible work schedule is available including normal work hours between the hours of 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Permanent, Full-Time Appointments
All jobs are permanent, full-time appointments unless otherwise stated in the announcement. The following benefits are available:
Paid Leave: Vacation leave is earned at the rate of five hours biweekly. Leave accrual increases gradually until eight hours of leave are earned biweekly for twelve or more years of service. Sick leave is earned at the rate of four hours biweekly. Paid parental and family leave benefits are also offered. Leave is pro-rated for part-time employees.
Holidays: There are eleven paid fixed holidays each year, as well as two floating holidays. Initial allotment of floating holidays may vary based on when you are hired.
Health and Dental Insurance: Four group health insurance plans are offered - a health maintenance organization, two plans with in-network only coverage, and a high-deductible plan with in and out-of-network coveerage, along with a Health Savings Account (HSA). Group dental insurance is also offered, with two options for coverage. The County pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. The County also contributes to the HSA.
Life Insurance: Basic life insurance is provided at no cost to employees. The benefit is one times annual salary. Additional life insurance may be purchased for yourself, spouse, and/or children.
Retirement: The County retirement program is made up of three parts: a defined benefit (pension) plan, a defined contribution plan (401(a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement benefit based on your final average salary and years of service with the County. You contribute a portion of your salary on a pre-tax basis to this plan. General employees contribute 4% of pay; uniformed public safety employees contribute 7.5% of pay. The County also contributes to this plan. Employees become vested in the plan at five years of service.
For general employees, the County also contributes 4.2% of pay to a defined contribution plan (401(a)). The 457 deferred compensation plan allows you to save for retirement on either a pre-tax (457b) or post-tax (457 Roth) basis up to the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically enrolled with a pre-tax contribution equal to 2% of your pay. A variety of investment options are available for the 401(a) and 457 plans.
Other Benefits: The County also offers health care, dependent care, and parking flexible spending accounts; adoption assistance, tuition reimbursement; transit and walk/bike to work subsidies; a college savings plan; wellness programs; training opportunities; and a variety of other benefits.
Permanent, Part-Time Appointments:
Part-time employees who work ten or more hours per week receive paid leave and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.
Limited Term Appointments:
Benefits are the same as permanent appointments except that the employees do not achieve permanent status.
Temporary Regular Appointments:
Temporary regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental, and basic life insurance as described above. They are also eligible for vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays.
Temporary Seasonal and Occasional Appointments:
Temporary employees who work on a seasonal basis or variable hours receive sick leave, but do not normally receive other paid leave or benefits. Exceptions are noted in individual announcements.
