State of Utah is Hiring a Museum Education Manager Near Salt Lake, UT


Title: Museum Education Manager
Description: Under the supervision of the Director of Education & Engagement, the Museum Education Manager facilitates the development, presentation, and support of programs that interpret the museum’s mission for school audiences, community organizations, and the general public. They will be responsible for ensuring that the planning and implementation of these programs are in alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic direction of Utah Historical Society (UHS) and of the Education & Engagement (E&E) team. The successful candidate will build program audiences and participation in Museum of Utah programming, increasing the museum’s presence, reputation, and outreach in the community.
Principal Duties
  • Programming (10%)
    • Develop and implement a wide variety of educational programs for teachers, students, and lifelong learners at the museum.
    • Develop and implement programming that showcases the museum’s collections and exhibitions, with the goal of increasing access to the museum and increasing knowledge of participants.
    • Collaborate with UHS’s Community Engagement Coordinator and Utah’s diverse communities to develop and implement programming that presents cultural traditions and local history in sensitive and authentic ways.
    • Research and develop written and visual materials for educational programs.
    • Develop summer and/or after-school programs that meet community needs.
    • Develop educational curriculum for the museum in coordination with K-12 Initiatives Program staff and state educational standards. Collaborate with colleagues to develop teacher professional development.
  • Program Logistics (20%)
    • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate activities and public programs at the Museum of Utah. (Audience: preschool to advanced age).
    • Coordinate logistics with internal and external stakeholders and assist with event planning, preparation, and set up and tear down.
    • Assist in long-term planning and establishing an annual calendar for educational programs.
    • Work with external partners to develop and implement collaborative programs.
    • In collaboration with the Director of Education & Engagement, lead evaluation of educational impact of public programming at the museum.
    • Maintain all administrative records related to education and public program events at the museum.
    • Participate in special museum-wide events, initiatives, and committees when appropriate.
    • Prepare social media assets (content, photographs, etc.) and other marketing assets related to education programs at the museum for the Director of Marketing & Communications.
    • Maintain attendance data, training schedules, reports and other program documents. Maintain supplies and equipment inventory.
  • Tours (40%)
    • Plan, implement, and supervise school-based programs and partnerships occurring at the museum.
    • Coordinate with the Capitol Preservation Board on school field trips and Capitol tours, ensuring that the museum becomes an essential stop within their existing program.
    • Develop and coordinate with UHS staff to create site-based tours for the general public.
  • Cross-Collaborative Efforts (10%)
    • Coordinate programming to align with interpretive themes and exhibit schedules.
    • Collaborate with exhibit and collections staff to provide input on educational opportunities present in the museum galleries, interpretive themes, and special exhibits.
    • Work closely with UHS staff to develop interpretive materials for use in and out of the galleries. Examples include exhibit guides, educational handouts, educators’ guides and packets, family guides, special brochures, web-based materials, blogs and articles for the newsletter, activity guides, etc. to Collaborate with UHS staff to create community and classroom materials to bring the museum out of the walls of the museum. Examples include traveling trunks, digital projects, 3D materials for hands-on activities, etc.
    • Develop and manage an educational teaching collection (education collection objects).
  • Budget & Staff Management (20%)
    • Assist with budget preparation and allocation of resources for educational programs and activities at the museum.
    • Assist in recruiting and training museum educator staff including part-time, contract and seasonal staff, and volunteers.
    • Manage schedules and work priorities for part-time museum education staff. This includes paid, part-time staff who provide interpretive experiences and hands-on programming at the museum.
    • Ensure educational programs are booked on the museum educational calendar.
    • Mentor museum educator staff regarding relevant best practices in teaching pedagogy, learning standards, and other research around teacher professional development.
    • Guide and support museum educators on program development, operations, and implementation.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Some evening or weekend working hours will be required in order to support the public initiatives of the UHS.
  • Broad support and participation in the strategic direction of the UHS.
  • Collaboration with community partners or internal stakeholders on special projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Location: Hybrid; 3760 S Highland Dr, Millcreek, UT. Offices will be located at the Museum of Utah following the spring/summer of 2026.
  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid/flexible work schedule. A position's eligibility for remote work is established by agency management and is subject to change at their discretion at any time and for any reason. Note: Under Administrative Rule R13-4 all work must be performed within the State of Utah. As such employees should either reside in Utah or be in the process of relocating to within 30 days of their start date.
Compensation: $25 - $32/hr and State of Utah benefits

Ideal Candidate/Qualifications
The successful candidate will be a self-motivated leader and someone dedicated to lifelong learning in informal educational spaces. Ideal qualifications include:
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in museology, public history, education, or related humanities disciplines is preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of and experience in best practices in history museum education.
  • Ability to lead, organize, and manage multiple projects and tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with other educators, school administrators, outside partners, volunteers, and Museum staff.
  • Ability to support, lead, and guide other educators with diverse working styles and experience levels.
  • Ability to physically lift, transport, and carry program materials off-site and throughout the museum.
  • Ability to lead activities both indoors and outdoors.
  • Committed to helping implement the 2023-2027 UHS Strategic Plan through their work.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive fleet vehicle
  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
