Granite School District is Hiring a Granite Peaks - Adult Education - Hourly Teacher Near Salt Lake, UT

The successful applicant will be an employee of Granite School District - Granite Peaks Adult Education Department, but the actual teaching location is The Salt Lake County Metro Jail (3415 S 900 W). The successful applicant will currently be teaching studdents who are preparing to take the GED test.
Applicant must either have a current Utah Professional teaching license (Secondary or Elementary) or a current Secondary or Elementary out-of-state professional level license. No Associate License candidates will be considered for this position.
  • In and out-of-state applicants must upload a copy of their current state license and a resume with their application in order to be considered
  • Secondary endorsement required. Math endorsement preferred.
  • ESL endorsement preferred.
  • Teacher must have full charge of the classroom and be the teacher of record.
  • Teacher must teach during regular school hours (not prior to school or after school).
  • Must have strong Math (Subject) Skills
  • At least 3 years full time teaching experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience teaching the 2014 GED curriculum preferred
  • Must be able to teach a multi-leveled class
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Office and Google docs
  • Must be able to take a lesson framework and build a curriculum around it that meets the needs of the diverse student population
  • Must be able to teach in an open enrollment setting where new students are added to existing classes on a weekly basis.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check
  • This is a part-time position; there are no benefits.

Job SummaryUnder the direction of the site coordinator, the GED teacher is responsible for creating a positive learning environment where students develop the skills to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, lifelong learners and productive citizens. Teachers maintain a safe environment; establish rapport with students, parents and colleagues; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further education and do so in accordance with each student’s ability. Teachers differentiate curriculum and use effective research-based methods of instruction.
Essential Functions
  • Teach the College and Career Readiness Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy and for Mathematics as outlined by the USBE.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the individual
  • Utilize effective teaching techniques in translating lesson plans into productive student learning experiences which best utilize the time available for instruction
  • Utilize computers and other technological classroom support equipment in student instruction.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom through organization and appropriate discipline strategies.
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth, maintain appropriate records, prepare progress reports.
  • Be familiar with and willing to implement the Granite Way.
  • Communicate and cooperate with other professional staff regarding the student’s academic and personal growth areas.
  • Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are essential functions of this position.
  • Provide and maintain a safe and supportive environment in the classroom/
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participate in faculty meetings as required.
  • Administer appropriate student attendance policies and procedures.

Required Training and Education

  • Requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Requires a valid Professional Educator License for the State of Utah within the relevant “Licensure Area of Concentration” and if applicable, “Endorsement.”
Working Environment
  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Physical DemandsRequires the ability to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Ability to reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects. Ability to talk or hear. Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to focus. Physical demands require moving and lifting supplies, equipment, etc. up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
