The Office of Family Assistance

This position is located in the Office of Family Assistance (OFA). OFA oversees cash and food assistance programs, work support programs for recipients of cash and food assistance, and refugee programs. Learn more about the office by visiting the Office of Family Assistance webpage.

What You’ll Do

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known as food stamps, helps low-income people buy nutritious food. We review SNAP cases to make sure they were completed timely and accurately. In this job, you will review the work of county caseworkers to see if they are making the correct decision on SNAP cases according to regulations. Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing food stamp budgets
  • Researching food stamp policy
  • Managing and coordinating your schedule
  • Traveling to counties to interview clients
  • Calling people to verify information
  • Reviewing screens in the Ohio Benefits eligibility system
  • Sending contact letters to clients
  • Completing interviews with clients, some who may get angry
  • Completing cases in the Federal System
  • Uploading materials and verifications for each review

Realistic challenges of this position could include:

  • Maintaining a timeliness and accuracy rate of at least 88% on each review
  • Managing and implementing policy updates
  • Independently managing multiple assignments with overlapping due dates

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm; requires traveling 5-6 times a month. Remaining days are currently spent working remotely.

Travel: This position travels approximately 20% to 30% of the time throughout an 8-10 county area.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following minimum qualification options to be considered for this position:

Option 1:

  • 36 mos. exp. as public assistance caseworker, with experience in all categories of public assistance and 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in technical writing and 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in mainframe databases and valid Ohio driver license.

Or Option 2:

  • Completion of undergraduate core coursework in social &/or behavioral science and 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in public assistance regulations & policies relative to all public assistance programs and 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in technical writing and 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in mainframe databases and valid Ohio driver license.

Or Option 3:

  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

Technical & Professional Skills Utilized: basic math; ability to write professionally, be organized, investigative, motivated, and communicate well.

Pay Information

This position is in the State of Ohio’s E1 Pay Schedule, Pay Range 32. Unless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be the minimum salary of that pay range (step 1, currently $27.84 per hour). These ranges provide a standardized pathway for pay increases. With continued employment, new hires move to the next step in the range after 6 months and annually thereafter. Cost of Living Adjustments increase wages in these ranges each fiscal year. The current step progression wages are in the table below.
