State of Missouri is Hiring a Legal Counsel - 3DIR034 Near Jefferson City, MO

Salary: $2604.16 - $2812.50 semi-monthly

Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of the Director’s Office in the General Counsel’s Office, and will be located at 1101 Riverside Drive, Jefferson City, MO 65101 in the Lewis and Clark State Office Building.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources General Counsel’s Office is seeking a full-time Legal Counsel in its Jefferson City office to support the Department’s Division of Environmental Quality’s Air Pollution Control Program. What you’ll do:

  • Issue-spotting, problem-solving, and providing advice and counsel to Department team members regarding relevant Program matters, with emphasis on the federal Clean Air Act and the Missouri Air Conservation Law.
  • Drafting, interpreting, and analyzing current and proposed state and federal statutes, regulations, and policies;
  • Representing the Department in negotiations with regulated entities, cooperating agencies, vendors, and others;
  • Coordinating compliance assistance and enforcement matters, including working with the Attorney General’s Office on matters referred to that office for litigation; and
  • Counseling Department staff regarding Air Program matters and general legal
  • The position will offer opportunities to practice in multiple areas of environmental law.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris doctorate degree from an accredited law school with excellent academic credentials;
  • Prior experience in environmental, regulatory, or administrative law;
  • License to practice law in the State of Missouri or ability to become licensed in Missouri;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and organizational skills; and
  • Outstanding judgment and

  • Possess initiative, independence, and the ability to apply their knowledge in a professional and timely manner to implement the Department’s mission of protecting our air, land, water, and mineral resources; preserving our unique natural and historic places; and providing recreational and learning opportunities; while promoting the environmentally sound and energy-efficient operations of businesses, communities, agriculture, and industry for the benefit of all Missourians.
  • Works collaboratively with program and division team members and leadership, and is a role model of the Department values.
  • The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience in environmental law or similar experience in administrative or natural resources law.
