State of Missouri is Hiring a Health Information Technician Near Cape Girardeau, MO

Assist in the daily operation of a health information management unit. As a Health Information Technician (HIT), this position is accountable maintaining a systematic flow of clinical information to all sections of the facility. Work includes ensuring adherence to the most current edition of the International Classification of Diseases Manual (ICD) and/or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) coding systems. The HIT is responsible for collection of data, analyzing clinical records, coding and posting diagnosis, handling releases of confidential information and preparing related reports. This position handles admission and discharge recording, collection of statistical data and supervision of subordinate clerical and technical staff. The HIT is responsible for ensuring confidentiality in all medical records and all documentation.

Annual Salary: $46,962.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current medical terminology, classification and coding systems, and accreditation standards and guidelines.
  • Ability to perform analyses of health information records for accuracy and completeness
  • Ability to classify and code medical records
  • Ability to maintain an ongoing evaluation of health information services in relation to established standards and new technology

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in Health Information Technology accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) OR certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)

  • Physical requirements and activities include: climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and visual acuity

Job Description Summary:

  • Maintain systematic flow of clinical information to and from all departments of the facility
  • Collect and compile data for statistical reports by manual or automated systems for use by administration, medical staff, other departments and governmental agencies. Retrieve information and prepare reports for administrative and professional staff
  • Supervise the release of information and the preparation of detailed summaries of medical records in response to requests from other health care providers, attorneys and other governmental or private agencies
  • Coding of diagnosis assuring adherence to International Classification of Disease Adapted Manual, plan, establish, and maintain diagnosis indices. Audit medical records for qualitative and quantitative completeness based on facility policy and accreditation standards.
  • Maintain records for active-thinned and discharged Veterans in an organized fashion, according to professional standards.
  • Supervise the preparation of closed medical records and the eventual destruction of closed records according to government regulations and facility policy.
  • Prepare records for presentation in court in response to a subpoena duce’s tecum; serve as a witness as required; monitor compliance with necessary departmental, facility and medico-legal procedures.
  • Must ensure compliance with Electronic Health Record (EHR) Emergency Preparedness Policy.
  • Perform manual electronic data entry. Maintenance/data entry of electronic health record to include but not limited to: scanning of paper records, initiation of medical record for new admissions and readmissions, icon/identifier management, provide census management oversight. Assign and manage EHR access levels for employees, healthcare professionals and surveyors.
  • Develop and direct orientation and educational programs for facility personnel in those phases of medical records to include HIPAA and EHR, as applicable. Provide oversight and or coordination visits of health care professionals ensuring appropriate documentation is entered into the HER. Ensure health care professionals / entities are credentialed and privileged per VA regulations.
  • Supervise the daily operation of medical record department. Select, orient, train and supervise technical and clerical employees of the health information unit; provide advice and assistance as needed. Ensure performance management is implemented and reviewed with employee(s) in accordance with facility policy. Assist in selection, recruitment and training of new employees. Provide counseling and disciplinary action as necessary
  • Prepare schedules/assignments for weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc. special assignments. Complete departmental scheduling for staff. Hold monthly departmental meetings
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures related to the control and use of medical records. Ensure compliance with governmental regulations.
  • Coordinate with purchasing the ordering of equipment and supplies. Maintain budget compliance.
  • Lift and/or move materials, as necessary, in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Adhere to infection control procedures as trained.
  • Maintain required hard copies of Veteran information as directed.
  • May be required to schedule Veteran clinical appointments. Participate in the care planning process as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
