Educational Specialist

Hawthorn Children’s Psychiatric Hospital

Semi-Monthly Salary: $2,288.44 * Annual Salary: $54,922.61

Scheduled Hours: 0700-1530 (Off: Saturday/Sunday) Work Area: Residential

Hawthorn Children’s Psychiatric Hospital provides specialized care for children and adolescents diagnosed with mental illness. We are looking for a positive and energetic teacher for our Residential Program. This teacher will have an interest in helping children with mental illness while maximizing their potential. Our educators provide instruction to youth in our Inpatient and Residential Programs guided by a Missouri DESE course of study, but have the ability as well, to exercise creativity and flexibility in adapting coursework to fit the needs and abilities of the students you teach. Your time with the students allows you to see the difference we make in the lives of the children in our care. As a teacher at Hawthorn, you will receive ongoing guidance with the ability to collaborate with peers, work intensively with other disciplines, and receive classroom support; all while providing you the opportunity to flourish in your professional role with the students and the facility.

Responsibilities:

  • Individualize instruction to meet student needs in a mixed placement, mixed ability classroom of 4-8 students
  • Revise, develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEP) and Section 504 Plans
  • Attend and contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings regarding students in your classroom
  • Develop treatment goals for classroom use and report on those goals weekly
  • Model and teach social skills to students in your classroom
  • Keep attendance and academic records and report on those records at specific times

Eligibility:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and four or more years of post-baccalaureate special education teaching experience in a school accredited by a governing agency (such as Missouri Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education or the North Central Association on Accreditation and School Improvement). Missouri Career Continuous Professional Certification (CCPC) preferred. (Substitutions may be allowed).

OR

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in Special Education; and Two or more years of post-baccalaureate teaching experience in a school accredited by a governing agency (such as Missouri Dept. of Elementary and Secondary Education or the North Central Association on Accreditation and School Improvement). (Substitutions may be allowed).

Certification and/or degree in Special Education preferred.

Experience writing and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) preferred.

Reports to the Education Program Manager and the Chief of Clinical Services.
