Introduction

The Maryland InsuranceAdministration (MIA) is an independent State agency that regulates Maryland'sinsurance industry and protects consumers by monitoring and enforcing insurers'and insurance professionals' compliance with State law. Through the diligenceof a highly professional staff of market analysts, financial analysts,accountants, lawyers, law enforcement officers, actuaries, complaintinvestigators, and others, the MIA works to facilitate a strong and competitiveinsurance marketplace where consumers are well informed and treated fairly.Staff members are subject matter experts who serve as a resource for lawmakers,consumers, and other public and private entities.The MIA is charged with abroad range of responsibilities including the licensure of insurance carriersand insurance producers (brokers/agents) operating in Maryland, the conduct offinancial examinations of companies to monitor financial solvency, and thereview and approval of rates and contract forms. The MIA investigates reportsof consumer fraud and consumer complaints about life, health, automobile,homeowners, and/or property insurance. Insurance carriers are subject to marketconduct examinations and other actions to monitor compliance with Maryland law.The MIA also has a unit dedicated to consumer education and outreach, whichparticipates in hundreds of events and reaches thousands of individualconsumers annually.

Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as a senior examiner and examiner-in-charge performing examinations, investigations, and desk audits of the business practices of HMOs, dental plans, nonprofit health service plans, and life and health insurers, and any other person or entities engaged in the life and health insurance industry and regulated by the Maryland Insurance Administration.This position functions as a lead examiner overseeing all aspects of market conduct examinations and investigations. The Senior Market Conduct Examiner may be a liaison between the market conduct team and the company being examined, and may assign tasks to team members working on an exam in addition to performing analysis of information provided by the company. The Senior Market Conduct Examiner may also draft correspondence, reports, and orders resulting from the exam.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:�Bachelor’s�degreefrom an accredited four-year college or university.Experience: Five (5)years of work experience as an insurance regulator or in the Compliance orLegal department of a life or health carrier or related profession.OR�Nine years of workexperience as an�insurance regulator or in the Compliance or Legaldepartment of a life or health carrier or related profession.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of Marylandinsurance laws and regulations and/or federal regulations concerning life andhealth insuranceFamiliarity with thestandards in the NAIC Market Regulation Handbook and standard market conductpracticesAn Accredited InsuranceExaminer or Certified Insurance Examiner designation from the InsuranceRegulatory Examiners Society or similar credentialStrong research abilitiesAbility to communicateeffectively verbally and in writingAbility to analyzeinformation and draw accurate conclusions
