The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers, school counselors, interpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing.

The Louisiana Special School District is seeking applicants for the position of

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - LA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF.

Qualifications and Qualities

  • 3 years of teaching experience, preferably working with students from similar backgrounds to LSD students.
  • Master’s Degree required.
  • Leadership certification required (or enrolled or participating in a state approved certification route)
  • Experience in Deaf Education, preferred
  • Sign Language Proficiency-Advanced level, preferred (2 years to achieve)
  • Experience working with students with exceptionalities.
  • Desire to grow as an Assistant Director and face the challenges that come with deep reflection and direct feedback on your classroom practices/experiences.
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic. Ability to constantly find joy in the successes and challenges of our work. Ability to demonstrate that joy towards students, families, and teammates.
  • Personal initiative to better yourself and those around you. Drive to actively pursue excellence in everything you do, even when not given direct coaching.
  • Strong knowledge in content area of choice, demonstrated through lesson planning, execution, and intervention with all students.
  • Effective rating measured using a state approved and district adopted evaluation system.
  • Deep belief that all students, regardless of their backgrounds and educational pasts, have the potential to succeed in college and beyond and that it is the responsibility of schools to help students realize that potential.

Position – Assistant Director

The Assistant Director’s core purpose is to provide professional, highly-effective instructional leadership that will achieve outstanding results for students at LSD. The Assistant Director promotes a clear and compelling instructional vision that is shared by all members of their team. Ultimately, the Assistant Director is responsible for ensuring that the curriculum, teaching and assessment practices inspire high levels of engagement, achievement and progress for all students at LSD. The Assistant Director is a key member of the leadership team and reports directly to the Director. The Assistant Director will assist the Director in overall administration of instructional program and campus level operations.

  • Ensure that the school meets all ambitious academic goals as measured by interim and summative norm- and criterion-referenced assessments.
  • Ensure the adoption of high-quality curriculum in core content areas.
  • Ensure all teachers receive weekly walk-throughs and engage in weekly coaching meetings with the appropriate personnel. Coach teachers across content areas, across experience levels, and needs, from curriculum to lesson planning, rigor, execution, behavior management, classroom culture, etc.
  • Build strong relationships with the Director, the whole team, and each individual staff member founded on trust, honesty, accountability, and enthusiasm.
  • Provide individual coaching and support to teachers as needed to improve their data driven instruction.
  • Create detailed plans for establishing and maintaining positive school culture.
  • Collect data on and manage the school-wide reward and consequence system. 
  • Ensure systems are in place to accurately track and respond to trends in data for disciplinary incidents and that there are timely investigations, pre-mediation conversations, and student mediations to ensure safe, orderly, and positive school climate.
  • Frequent communication with the Executive Director, daily communication with other LSD Personnel.
  • Provide professional administrative leadership in executing and implementing school philosophy, policies, procedures, programs, policies and regulations mandated by LSD, SSD, and other state and federal regulatory agencies.
