Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, is seeking applicants to fill our Food Service Supervisor position for the State Hospital West (SHW) located in Nampa. SHW is a 16-bed Adolescent Psychiatric Treatment Hospital nestled between Ridgecrest and Centennial golf courses on a picturesque piece of state property along the Nampa Interstate 84 corridor. This position plans and supervises food preparation and service. This position also involves bending, stooping, and lifting and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds. The work environment requires tolerance to hot and humid conditions.

Any applicant offered employment in this position at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare will be required to complete a criminal history background investigation. Employment is dependent upon satisfactory results of the investigation.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

  • Confers with cooks, in charge of preparing meals, to insure adequate amounts of food is on hand to produce planned menus.
  • Maintains inventory of all food and supplies ordered.
  • Writes, tests, and adopts new and standardized recipes.
  • Plans menus bi-annually for Registered Dietitian approval.
  • Develops methods for using leftovers and eliminating waste.
  • Checks trays, food containers, and plates for appearance and accuracy of servings.
  • Ensures proper portioning and meal delivery to satellite facilities.
  • Ensures special diet plans are followed.
  • Tastes food for flavor and tests for proper temperature.
  • Prepares menu items and serves meals during absence of kitchen personnel.
  • May prepare food for special diets and modified textures.
  • Trains staff in food service methods meeting institution regulations and policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position.   • Good knowledge of institutional food service health and safety regulations, procedures and equipment used in storing, preparing, cooking, and serving large quantities of food.

Typically gained by one of the following:

  • Completion of a one year vocational food service course.
  • Completion of six hours of college coursework in nutrition with work experience in institutional food-service.
  • Completion of Food Service Supervisors' course for Institutions and Hospitals, presented by American Dietetic Association.
  • Approximately two years experience as an institutional senior cook.

AND

  • Some knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition of dietetics and experience planning menus to feed large numbers of people with special dietary needs.

Typically gained by one of the following:

  • Completion of six college credit hours in nutrition.
  • Completion of Food Service Supervisors' course for Institutions and Hospitals, presented by American Dietetic Association.
  • Approximately two years experience as a senior level cook with line-service training in nutrition and dietetics.

AND

  • Experience supervising and training food service staff as well as interpreting and applying institutional food service regulations and standards.

Typically gained by one of the following:

  • Food-service supervisory experience of at least six months supervising five or more employees.
  • Completion of food service coursework in supervisory techniques.
