State of Idaho is Hiring an ENGINEERING TELEMETRY TECHNICIAN Near Boise, ID

The Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR) is offering an exciting opportunity for an individual to impact water management in Idaho. The position is in the Hydrology Section and is based at the state office in Boise, Idaho. It is open to electronic or radio technicians who have knowledge and experience in planning, installing, and maintaining telemetered data collection sites.

The selected individual will work with a team responsible for implementing the State of Idaho's water resource programs and initiatives on behalf of IDWR. At IDWR, employees enjoy autonomy, work-life balance, some fieldwork, and a professional yet relaxed environment.


Example of Duties

  • Design, installation, and maintenance of telemetered hydrologic monitoring sites
  • Site selection and development of equipment specifications
  • Design work for water measuring devices such as weirs and flumes and/or other streamflow measuring devices
  • Determining the best method for transferring the data collected at each site
  • Monitoring spring flows, irrigation return flows, and groundwater monitoring sites using data loggers, sensors, and flow meters that are powered by either solar power, Alternating Current (AC), or a combination of both
  • Troubleshooting equipment installed by the department and, on occasion, equipment installed by partners on-site and over the phone
  • Maintaining inventory of parts, keeping equipment firmware and programs up to date, performing minor repairs of equipment, and keeping assigned work areas organized
  • Measuring surface water discharge from springs, streams, drains, canals, and groundwater wells. Helping to negotiate and write Memoranda of Agreement with partners


Minimum Qualifications

  • Good knowledge of engineering principles
  • Experience reading and interpreting schematics and drawings
  • Experience in general electronics and electro-mechanical devices
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: troubleshooting and repairing scientific monitoring systems including data loggers; programmable logic controllers (PLCs); cell phone and radio modems
  • Experience using global positioning system (GPS) equipment and using geographic information system (GIS) software

Typically gained by a bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical science with 2 years of experience, or an associate degree in applied science (electronics) with 5 years of experience, or military radio training with 5 years of experience.


Desired Qualifications and Experience

  • Knowledge of water resource data collection techniques and instrumentation
  • Knowledge of farm irrigation systems
  • Knowledge of basic high-voltage systems
  • Knowledge of basic shop and electrical safety
  • Experience in natural resource-related data collection, management, and analysis
  • Experience with computer applications, programming (CRBasic), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Experience measuring and monitoring surface water flow in open or closed conduits and groundwater
  • Ability to lift 60 lbs and to climb 100 ft. antenna towers if necessary
  • Good analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills
