WHERE YOU'LL WORK:

Compliance Division:

Field Audit Branch: The Field Audit Branch conducts field examinations and investigations of taxpayers’ tax returns, books of accounts and pertinent records for compliance with State tax laws: Net Income, General Excise, County Surcharge, Use, Liquor, Tobacco, Fuel, Withholding, Public Service Company, Franchise, Multistate Tax Compact, Transient Accommodations, Rental Motor Vehicle, Tour Vehicle Surcharge, and Conveyance Tax. Tax auditing increases taxpayers’ understanding of tax laws, promotes responsibility and accuracy in the self-assessment of taxes, deters tax evasion and carelessness in filing tax returns, assures uniformity in application of State tax laws, and produces additional revenue for our State government.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

As an auditor, your primary responsibility will be to conduct audits independently under the general supervision of a section/group chief. This position will exclusively examine claims for the motion picture, digital media, and film production income tax credit pursuant to Section 235-17, Hawaii Revised Statues, and other tax expenditures. The audits involve intricate accounting, auditing, and legal problems due to the multitude and complexity of tax activities, organizational setup, and the accounting methods and systems used.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Required Knowledge: Candidates must possess a thorough and extensive knowledge of standard guides, precedents, methods and techniques in the area of tax laws, rules and regulations. In addition, they must be able to plan, organize, guide and oversee the work of others and to deal tactfully with the public and other officials.

Required Qualification & Experience:

Applicants must have had the kind, quality and amount of experience indicated below, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with at least twelve (12) semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing subjects with 3 years of specialized experience.
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting from an accredited college or university with 2 years of specialized experience.
  • Master's degree in accounting from and accredited college or university with 2 years of specialized experience.

Specialized experience: Progressively responsible professional auditing experience requiring the knowledge and application of generally accepted professional accounting and auditing principles, standards, theory, and practices for the purpose of analyzing and interpreting accounting books, records, and systems.

Required License(s) or Certificate(s): Must possess a valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii.

The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered.
