The Work You Will Do:

The Oil & Gas Program is accepting applications for a full-time career service Environmental Specialist II position (commensurate with experience). This position is a professional position that is responsible for supporting the Department’s south Florida Oil & Gas Program regulatory activities.

Where You Will Work:

The Oil & Gas Program Field Office is located in Fort Myers which is part of the Fort Myers-Cape Coral Metropolitan Area. You will be working primarily throughout the Southwest Florida Peninsula – based out of this office.

  • The Field Office is located inland around 12 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.
  • There is no state income tax for residents of Florida.
  • Mission critical duties require travel in a State-provided vehicle typically within a 75-mile radius of the Field Office. Travel time to sites may range from 20% to 50% of your work time depending on field activities and location. Overnight travel is infrequent and generally less than 3% of your time.

Pay:

$45,000.00 - $49,790.00/annually (Commensurate with experience)

Your Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in coordination of the day-to-day Oil & Gas Program regulatory activities of the south Florida field office.
  • Performs inspections of South Florida field operations for all work conducted under oil & gas permits issued by the Department.
  • For geographic field operations, using explosives, work with program staff to monitor third part observers and overall compliance with permits.
  • For well siting operations, inspect areas proposed for oil & gas drilling and evaluate potential groundwater and surface environmental impacts and make recommendations for Department final agency action.
  • Inspect drilling and producing operations for compliance with DEP rules.
  • Inspect oil well plugging operations as necessary.
  • Inspect cleanup of oil and/or saltwater spills.
  • Advise management when problems requiring higher-level authority are encountered and participate in the problem-solving process. Maintain field compliance schedules and take appropriate action when necessary.
  • Assist in the acquisition of geologic data and perform various stratigraphic and subsurface environmental geology studies as necessary to define and protect Florida’s groundwater resources and economic reserves.
  • Complete special work projects as assigned.
  • Maintain professional expertise through approved short courses and reading journals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques and methods
  • Knowledge of communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of equipment necessary for the data collection of analysis and report and map preparation
  • Knowledge of personal computer and related software.
  • Ability to serve as an emergency technical advisor to the Office of Emergency Response with regard to petroleum operations with the section’s south Florida regulatory district.
  • Ability to work after hours, weekends, and holidays, on-call status and/or overtime required (as needed)
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities and work independently.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and 1-year of verifiable related experience; or Any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described in this positing, for a total of five years. 
  • Valid Driver License. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science related field.
  • Knowledge of, or prior experience in, the oil and gas industry
  • Knowledge of the Department’s Oil & Gas program and permitting process
  • Mapping and data skills
  • Knowledge of state and local government environmental regulations
  • Experience interpreting and applying environmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
