Position Summary:
Take the next step in your career by becoming the state-level point person for English language arts in Colorado. Support language arts educators throughout the state and help shape the future of the Colorado Academic Standards for Reading, Writing and Communicating. This position provides state-level leadership and supports educators in the area of reading , writing and communicating throughout Colorado. Specific projects that fall under the responsibility of this position include support for standards revision and implementation, READ plans for grades 4 , Writing Frameworks, technical assistance to districts and schools and support of research-proven instructional practices in reading, writing, and communicating. This position collaborates with other offices within CDE including the areas of assessment, educator effectiveness, and post-secondary workforce readiness. This position lies within the Office of Standards and Instructional Supports and will support collaborative activities of the team. This position is hybrid, and some travel is required within the state of Colorado to support educators in local districts."
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Accountability
A. Provide state level leadership and support for reading, writing, and communicating education within the Preschool-12 and postsecondary systems, with a focus on grades 4 and above.
Strategic Outreach, Communication, & Coordination
A. Communicate with CDE staff, schools/districts, and education associations on an ongoing basis regarding opportunities in reading, writing, communicating.
B. Work with CDE's Communication office and other relevant CDE offices to further develop a reading, writing, communicating web page with regular communication related to opportunities and initiatives
C. Sustain and enhance reading, writing, communicating education collaboration with state-wide networks;
D. Communicate with state and national reading, writing, communicating organizations to gather and disseminate state of the art information relative to teaching and learning.
E. Collaborate with and provide support to the CDE Office of Early Literacy and School Readiness with regard to the READ Act, READ Act instructional program reviews, and the Comprehensive State Literacy Grant.
F. Work with the CDE Assessment Unit in the development and review of the CMAS ELA assessment.
G. Lead the revision and updating of reading, writing, communicating standards in alignment with legislative requirements and board directives.
Policy Leadership, Development, & Implementation
A. Work with the other CDE content specialists to support school districts with standards implementation and resource development;
B. Work with other units within the Colorado Department of Education to further the development of quality reading, writing, and communicating instruction;
C. Further the development of quality reading, writing, and communicating instruction through collaboration with state higher education and community partners;

QUALIFICATIONS AND CONDITIONS:
A. Deep content knowledge of the field, demonstrated through a combo of professional experience as educator in this field, and leading or facilitating professional devel for other educators, Education will substitute for experience
B. Demonstrated leadership experience in the K?12 educational system;
C. Demonstrated project management skills;
D. Experience developing and providing professional development for a variety of stakeholders;
E. Knowledge of factors contributing to opportunity and achievement gaps and knowledge of effective strategies for closing both gaps;
F. Knowledge of the Science of Reading;
G. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
H. Excellent facilitation and presentation skills;
I. Effective communication and conflict resolution skills;
J. Wide range of technology skills, particularly Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, website development;
K. Willingness to travel as required during the performance of assigned tasks;
L. Knowledge of effective professional development practices and programs both nationally and statewide;
M. Ability to build and sustain higher education and community partnerships to foster a strong reading, writing, and communicating education network state-wide;
N. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team;
O. The ability to pass a background check.
