This position will be filled at either the 1 or 2 or 3 level depending on the applicant’s qualifications and job experience

Mental Health Clinician 1:
$2295.00/biweekly
Mental Health Clinician 2: $2644.50/biweekly
Mental Health Clinician 3: $3023.25/biweekly
What you will be doing:
The Mental Health Clinician will provide therapeutic services including individual sessions, groups, milieu management, and crisis intervention to patients at API. This position may also provide these services on an outpatient basis to forensic patients. This position is housed within the Psychology department and is flexibly staffed, allowing for supervision toward licensure.

The selected candidate will work in an environment that is fast paced, busy, and challenging at times, but embraces collaboration through working closely with supervisors, managers, and personnel to assist in providing services to Alaska Psychiatric Institute.
This position is located at 3700 Piper Street in the U-MED district of east Anchorage which offers several maintained walking trails, parks and nearby lakes. This area is filled with several restaurants, shopping stores, and has easy access to public transportation.
Who we are looking for:
We are seeking a skilled clinician who can deliver services to a population of acute, complex psychiatric patients housed in a hospital setting. Comfort with and enthusiasm for this population is desired. Experience interfacing with individuals with cognitive limitations and/or severe and persistent mental illnesses is desired. Ability to engage cooperatively with an interdisciplinary team, collaborative skills, knowledge of psychiatric disorders, and a calm demeanor are desired attributes for this position. We are also looking for a candidate with the following competencies:
  • Decision Making: Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Psychology: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of human behavior and performance in various contexts, mental processes, or the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
Special Note:
Requires flexible working hours at times, may require weekend coverage.

Minimum Qualifications

Mental Health Clinician 1:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in counseling, psychology, social work, child guidance, vocational rehabilitation, or a closely related field.


Mental Health Clinician 2:

Master’s degree from an accredited college in counseling, psychology, social work, child guidance, vocational rehabilitation, or a closely related field.

AND

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities in

  • Analysis and Assessment: Uses information technology in accessing, collecting, analyzing, maintaining, and disseminating data and information.
  • Decision Making: Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.
  • Psychology: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of human behavior and performance in various contexts, mental processes, or the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Therapy and Counseling: Knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of physical and mental ailments, and career guidance.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Professional experience performing psychotherapeutic casework.
“Professional experience” means work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the power or right to decide or act according to one's own judgment.
"Training" and "education" in this guidance are synonyms for the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs.
"Typically gained by" means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job.


Mental Health Clinician 3:

Doctoral degree OR Master’s degree from an accredited college in counseling, psychology, social work, child guidance, vocational rehabilitation, or a closely related field.

AND

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities in

  • Developing Others: Develops the ability of others to perform and contribute to the organization by providing ongoing feedback and by providing opportunities to learn through formal and informal methods.
  • Managing Human Resources: Plans, distributes, coordinates, and monitors work assignments of others; evaluates work performance and provides feedback to others on their performance; ensures that staff are appropriately selected, utilized, and developed, and that they are treated in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Psychology: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of human behavior and performance in various contexts, mental processes, or the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Therapy and Counseling: Knowledge of diagnosis and treatment of physical and mental ailments, and career guidance.

Additional Required Information

  • Provide proof of Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap), Mumps, Measles, Rubella (MMR), and Varicella Immunizations.

  • Proof of Tuberculosis screening within past 12 months.
