Starling Physicians is Hiring a Travel Phlebotomist Near New Britain, CT

Starling Physicians is seeking for a full-time Float Phlebotomist within the Hartford County.

Must be willing to travel to different drawing stations on a rotating basis.

Responsibilities include specimen collection from patients as ordered by physician and specimen preparation at offsite locations. Must be flexible beyond regular scheduled hours that might include occasional weekend or holiday.

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Additional Skills & Requirements)

  • High School or equivalent degree required. Associates or Bachelor’s degree on a Health-related career preferred
  • Completion of an approved Phlebotomy Certification course training/certification required.
  • Knowledge of Phlebotomy and medical terminology required.
  • A minimum of three years of current phlebotomy experience
  • Ability to effectively convey instructions to patients
  • Basic computer and keyboarding skills required.

Relationships (Reports to, Supervises)

  • Reports directly to the Phlebotomy Supervisor and Team Leads
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, physicians, and the public.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for collecting laboratory samples on patients of all ages in a safe, accurately, and efficient manner, following laboratory phlebotomy procedure standards to support quality patient care.
  • Reviews requisitions for completeness of information to include diagnosis information, physician signature and any special specimen instructions. If incomplete, follows through with a contact to physician office(s) for correct information prior to the blood draw.
  • Responsible for labeling all specimens legibly and accurately without error at time of draw, with all pertinent information as required by hospital and departmental standards to ensure accurate result reporting.
  • Follows universal precaution standards for each blood draw 100% of the time.
  • Greets patient/client/coworkers in a friendly manner.
  • Communicates in a professional and concise manner, procedure(s) to be administered to patient.
  • Assist patients during and after the procedure.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality
  • Consistently packages specimens and requisitions immediately after blood draw for timely transport to the main laboratory. Follows all lab requirements for specimen packaging with less than 5 errors per year.
  • Adhere and follow all Starling, Laboratory, CLIA, Safety, HIPAA procedures as well as OSHA guidelines.
  • Completes requirements of each phlebotomy request on adult, adolescent and pediatric patients promptly and returns to phlebotomy front desk for next patient/client assignment to ensure patient wait time is not compromised and to maximize efficiency of the draw station team.
  • Performs office duties as required for the efficiency of the blood draw station:
  • Participates in daily upkeep of blood draw area.
  • Assists in teaching new employees.
  • Consistently enters lab test orders into the Lab LIS accurately and efficiently
  • Processes specimens obtained or received at the draw station to facilitate timely specimen testing at the main laboratory.
  • Follows established specimen handling guidelines and precautions.
  • Performs and records daily, weekly, monthly, and as required maintenance protocol in the draw station maintenance logs.
  • Performs and records centrifuge maintenance procedures,
  • Prepares specimen tracking manifest for each specimen shipment to Laboratory Central Processing.
  • Responsible for assuring specimen integrity from the point of obtaining the specimen at the draw station through courier pick up.
  • Performs all functions relating to patient demographics and insurance verification in our LIS- Labdaq, Centricity and Allscripts.
  • If required after training perform regular lab testing and /or POCT testing routinely and independently.
  • Report test results accurately in a timely manner following laboratory procedures including critical value policy.
  • Ability to problem-solve and work independently

Working Conditions, Physical Requirements

  • Requires full body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, and sitting for extended period of time.
  • Visual acuity and normal color perception required.
  • Physical demands may also include lifting and carrying items up to 50 lbs.
  • Other physical requirements include speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate effectively by phone or in person at normal volumes; vision adequate to read correspondence, computer screen, forms, etc.; and good manual dexterity.
