As a Starbucks decision science lead on the Global Fraud & Risk Management Team, you will....
Contribute to the success of Starbucks and play a critical role in managing digital fraud risk in all our global markets. The ideal candidate will operate comfortably within a highly collaborative team, and complex and fast-growing digital environment. You will be exceptional in the development, implementation, and ongoing validation of models and rulesets to mitigate fraud and abuse in support of Starbucks global digital sales channels and rewards programs. You will drive and evaluate new modeling methods and introduce novel visualizations and presentation paradigms to communicate discoveries.
Your ability to deliver results in the following areas will be the key to success:
  • Data Preparation: Lead development and validation of data manipulation and preparation, including extraction and synthesis of data extract data from various databases; perform exploratory data analysis, cleanse, massage, and aggregate data.
  • Data Visualization: Drives and evaluates new methods and introduces novel visualization and presentation paradigms to communicate discoveries.
  • Data manipulation and modeling: Exceptional in data manipulation and preparation; ability to procure and manipulate large-scale, complex data from a variety of systems (AWS, Azure, Oracle, on prem, web tool, etc.); experience reshaping data to ensure structure for analysis, filtering, and removal of outliers; demonstrated experience with advanced analytics or machine learning techniques, and cloud tech for data and analytics solutions (Azure, AWS); ability to spot anomalies and data issues and work cross functionally to resolve.
  • Data methodologies and analysis: Expertise in Excel, SQL, SAS, R, Python, Tableau / PowerBI; and in using data methodologies and skills in accordance with business applicability and insights operationalization; stays current on best practice statistical coding languages, methodology, and emerging ML techniques; applicable business experience and the ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information required for statistical analysis and modeling techniques, including descriptive and predictive analysis (models, for example regression, cluster, factor, survival, drivers, anomaly detection, etc.), and ability to determine the best methods would be to solve data problems.
  • Business Understanding: Possesses exceptional business acumen; identifies and understands business problems from strategy through operational impacts; identifies business problems to solve that have the most value to enterprise.
  • Insights Operationalization: Drive model refresh exercise and rule tuning process; responsible for model and rule performance as they pertain to KPI's.
  • Collaboration and Evangelism: Outstanding collaboration skills with colleagues at all organizational levels; work closely and educate cross-functional teams of decision science, global fraud, and functional business units across the company to share application of methodology and techniques, as well as application and value amongst product owners, marketers, engineering, and others across all organizations that global fraud serves.
We'd love to hear from people with:
  • Education: PhD or MS concentration preferred with discipline in Stats, Math, Comp Sci, Engineering, Economics, Psychology, Quantitative Social Science, or similar
  • Skills: Ability to handle, and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Exceptional proficiency with SQL, SAS, Python or R
  • Exceptional knowledge of statistics/ML model development
  • Business experience with several data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI)
  • Retail, customer loyalty, or eCommerce experience preferred
  • Prior fraud analytics experience strongly preferred
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years' experience in specific field or utilizing designated skills

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
