The Position:
The Research Assistant position, associated with the AmeriCorps VISTA program, is part of Catholic Charities USA's Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTA members serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty. The Workforce Development (WFD) program at St. Patrick Center (SPC) offers multiple comprehensive training and assistance programs for clients transitioning into the workforce from unemployment related to chronic poverty, justice-involvement, and/or homelessness.
Founded in 1965, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) is an anti-poverty program designed to provide needed resources to nonprofit organizations and public agencies to increase their capacity to lift communities out of poverty. The AmeriCorps VISTA program provides opportunities for Americans 18 years or older from a diverse range of backgrounds to dedicate a year of full-time service with an organization ("sponsor") to create or expand programs designed to empower individuals and communities in overcoming poverty.
The Research Assistant will research best practices for the homeless population in St. Louis City and St. Louis County. Research will include how to engage disadvantaged populations that have been homeless, veterans, and people reentering the community who have been justice involved. To alleviate poverty, clients need employment with wages that will sustain families. These clients will need resources for employment pathways though training, education, apprenticeships, and on the job training. The assistant will be responsible for finding and organizing information on available training paid by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), apprenticeships, education, and employers providing on the job training.
