Treasurer Job Description

The Treasurer of the church has the responsibility for carrying out most of the financial decisions made by the Finance Committee and the Church Council. The Book of Discipline charges the Treasurer with responsibility for three general areas:

  • · Disbursing funds: The church treasurer shall disburse all money contributed to causes represented in the church budget, and such other funds and contributions as the church council may determine.
  • · Reporting: The church treasurer shall make regular and detailed reports on funds received and expended to the committee on finance and the church council.
  • · Making monthly remittances to the conference treasurer: The church treasurer shall remit each month to the conference treasurer all apportionments and conference benevolences on hand.

Qualifications:

  • · At least an Associate Degree in accounting
  • · Qualifying experience will be taken into account.
  • · Experience with accounting software is a plus.
  • · Computer experience with Excel, Word, etc.
  • · Ability to perform administrative functions.
  • · Attend regular meetings of assigned committees and staff.
  • · Work with a team.

This position is part-time, salaried, and is supervised by the pastor.

Specific job responsibilities:

  • · Be a member of the church council, finance committee and charge conference. Attend those meetings.
  • · Work with the financial secretary to account for money received.
  • · Work with the chairperson of the finance committee on policies about handling money.
  • · Provide regular reports to the finance committee as required by the committee.
  • · Provide reports as requested to other church leaders.
  • · Work with the treasurer of the annual conference on any remittances required.
  • · Work with any of the general boards that require remittances.
  • · Work with the pastor, who is responsible for all phases of the work of the local church.
  • · Prepare, but not sign, checks to pay the bills of the church.
  • · Prepare, and submit payroll for direct deposit. Appropriate payroll taxes, and other

deductions are to be withheld on behalf of the employees of the church.

  • · Keep track of all disbursements using the church’s accounting software.
  • · Supervise account cash balances to ensure that adequate cash is maintained for expenses.

Recommend to the finance committee that any excess cash be invested.

  • · Prepare and file any payroll tax or other tax-related issues.
  • · Promptly remit monies to the conference or general boards.
  • · Maintain documentation supporting disbursements.
  • · Receive summary cash deposit information from the financial secretary.
  • · Assist with completion of annual reports of the church.
  • · Other related duties as may be assigned.
