Principal Responsibility

Fr. Alfred Center (FAC) provides a residential recovery program to homeless men who are ready to create sober and stable lives for themselves. The Fr. Alfred Center’s year-long, abstinence-based program empowers men with no income or resources with the tools to overcome addiction and the support to establish productive and healthy lives. The holistic treatment offered through St. Anthony’s multiple services is rare in the field of recovery, and allows for immediate assessment and thoughtful resolution of clients’ medical, legal, vocational and educational needs, most or all of which have been affected profoundly by the cycles of poverty and addiction. The Program Assistant helps residents in developing a solid 12-step oriented foundation for recovery from alcohol and drug addiction through a social model­ based, yearlong residential program. In the spirit of our Franciscan values and heritage, our team provides compassion and care daily. As a steward of healing and social justice, you are expected to meet the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Resident Engagement

  • Monitor Receptionist Desk and Front Office keeping sensitive matters confidential.
  • Responsible for accurate and thorough search of client bags entering the facility and reporting issues immediately.
  • Responsible for assisting in a comprehensive, full scale, Intake Office/Department with the support of the Intake Coordinator.
  • Maintain and continually improves the ongoing, intake wait list, with support of the Intake Coordinator.
  • Monitor residents’ hygiene, daily showers, shaving, general personal cleanliness, and FAC dress code.
  • Maintain inventory of resident’s phase-up materials, schedules groups and track attendance.
  • Oversee all residents on task assignments; for example; houseman, residents with chores, etc.
  • Review client appointments and approved passes in the electronically share data base (IntakeQ).
  • Maintain clients sign in and sign out logs ensuring that appointments and passes are approved through review of the IntakeQ and confirm clients are providing accurate information in the logs.
  • Oversees all resident activities at Fr. Alfred Center, monitors compliance with program and residence rules, and provide transportation as well as peer support for residents as needed.
  • Treat all guests with empathy, dignity, and respect. Seek to understand the other person's perspective and experience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively across cultures and an openness to learning about cultures not familiar to oneself.

Program Administration and Operations

  • Greet and assist vendors, guest and clients courteously, utilizing FAC standards to determine their needs and direct them appropriately.
  • Responsible for driving company vehicle to transport guests and staff as well as pick up and drop off internal office mail.
  • Conduct daily rounds to ensure cleanliness and organization of facility.
  • Input by retyping/recreating the new Intake forms and loading them into the IntakeQ
  • Assist in adding the new Intake component to the ETO for new clients.
  • Maintain and continually improves the ongoing, intake wait list, with support of the Intake Coordinator.
  • Perform room checks and document items of concern, as well as ensure rooms are kept clean and organized.
  • Responsible for training new staff on program specific systems (ETO & IntakeQ).
  • Under the guidance of SAF IT Team, maintain and manage all program technical systems and equipment.
  • Provide oversight to all community volunteers present in the facility.
  • Responsible for helping with issues, discrepancy or unusual situations that occur within the facility and reporting to the appropriate personnel.
  • Clean and maintain the vans and ensure that tracking of the travel log is maintained according to state standards in the appropriate binder.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the facility during the course of the shift, including staff office and break room.
  • Complete reports and all other paperwork neatly, legibly, and thoroughly.
  • Enter data and information electronically as required. Looks up data and reports electronically through a database as requested.
  • Understand and follow the organization's programs, policies, and procedures
  • Participate in regular training and development opportunities to increase personal capacity to apply innovative approaches to daily workflows, service delivery, and functions of the position.

  • Participate in relevant meetings supporting team communication and the program's capacity to fulfill organizational goals and mission.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED and three years’ experience in social services, particularly in drug and alcohol residential programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the disease and treatment of chemical dependency including 12-step work and social model programs.
  • Proficient in Windows, MS Office. Experience with client databases preferred. Ability or willingness to learn to use information and communication technologies (computers, smartphones, and iPads) to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information.
  • Experience with conflict de-escalation skills is preferred. Must complete Crisis Prevention training within 3 months of hire.
  • P.R./First Aid certification preferred. Must complete certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral, and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to be polite, diplomatic, and firm. Can set limits and practice professional boundaries with guests, volunteers, donors, and coworkers.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and high-pressure situations in a self-composed and self-assured manner.
  • Ability to complete paperwork neatly and legibly.
  • Ability to be punctual, reliable, cooperative, and stay team-oriented.
  • Experience working in a non-profit or community-based social service agency with people experiencing homelessness or poverty desired.
  • Commitment to St. Anthony Foundation Statement of Values and a desire to work for a social services agency serving the poor.
  • Valid CA Driver's license with excellent driving record.
