Squirrel Hill Health Center is Hiring a Medical Assistant - Bellevue Office Near Bellevue, PA

Squirrel Hill Health Center (SHHC), a dynamic and growing Federally Qualified Health Center in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking full time Medical Assistants for our new Bellevue location. All Medical Assistants may be asked to work at another location on occasion.SUMMARY: This position is responsible for carrying out Medical Assistant duties at SHHC sites on a rotating basis, providing triage (sorting/prioritizing patients) telephone service to ensure prompt identification of patients with high-risk conditions, and providing health education.The Medical Assistant will provide direct services to patients in the exam room at the direction of the Medical Assistant Manager, Director of Clinical Operations and/or the Assistant Director of Clinical Operations. She/he will be prompt, courteous, professional, and accurate in interactions with SHHC patients and work to ensure the smooth flow of both people and information through the SHHC system.
The Medical Assistant is a key member of the care team working to provide quality comprehensive services to patients and will work collaboratively with staff to provide team-based coordinated care.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
When assigned to work as a Clinic MA
  1. Gathers information needed for clinician to provide appropriate services.
  2. Performs patient preparation such as blood pressure readings, weights, heights, temperatures, PHQ2 screening, and medication and allergy history collection promptly, and records all such information accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in a timely manner.
  3. At the direction of the clinicians or by standing order. collects specimens and performs laboratory testing, and accurately documents activities in the EHR in a timely manner.
  4. At the direction of the clinicians. performs diagnostic and procedural testing.
  5. Performs calibration of equipment and quality controls.
  6. At the direction of the clinicians. follows SHHC procedures for administering vaccines to the appropriate candidates and documents administration in both the EHR and Pennsylvania Statewide Immunization Information System.
  7. Promptly answers incoming calls from physician’s offices, hospitals, emergency rooms, nursing homes and other emergency entities and promptly gathers information ensuring direct notification of clinician and/or appropriate member of the Care Team.
  8. Coordinates prescription refills by receiving information from faxes, the patient prescription line, and patient portal, obtaining authorization from the appropriate clinician and ensuring completion with appropriate documentation in the EHR.
  9. Enters completed referrals, diagnostic testing results, and immunization titers under the direction of the ordering clinician in the EHR.
  10. Works collaboratively with front office medical receptionists and the clinical team to ensure that SHHC provides the highest quality care for all patients.
  11. Receives and directs lab results to appropriate clinician.
  12. Ensures that all back areas and exam rooms are kept professional, stocked, clean, tidy and well organized at all times and ready for patients and clinicians.
  13. If fluent in a language other than English, acts as translator for patients as needed on the phone and in exam room, at the direction of the clinician.
  14. Maintains confidentiality and is compliant with HIPAA.
  15. Adheres to all SHHC policies and procedures.
  16. Accurately documents all necessary information in the electronic health record system in a timely fashion.
  17. Other duties as assigned.
When assigned to triage phones:
  1. Talks directly to patients on the telephone and then directs them to emergency rooms (ERs), urgent care centers, or to see SHHC providers during office hours.
  2. Performs short telephone screening of the patient situation to estimate severity of illness and/or injury including learning about chief complaint and, as possible, mental status information.
  3. Determines urgency of seeing the patient based on brief screening and on familiarity with a patient’s condition and history. 
  4. Uses computerized medical information database including algorithms that closely imitate physician logic and thought patterns as guide. 
  5. Sends patients with high-risk chief complaints such as chest pain, abdominal pain, or severe headaches to ER immediately. 
  6. Provides appropriate home health advice to patients who do not need to go directly to the ER.
  7. Ensures accurate notes of all communications are recorded in the patients’ record via the Electronic Health Record.
  8. Arranges appointments for patients who do not need to go to ER but need to see a physician. Consults with providers and nurses as needed.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Medical Assistant certificate preferred.
  2. Minimum three years of experience as Medical Assistant. One to two years of telephone triage experience, preferably in medical practice setting.
  3. Excellent organization skills and ability to deal effectively with the public.
  4. Skilled in using computer, printer, and fax machine.
  5. Medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding knowledge preferred.
  6. CPR certified.
  7. Second language preferred.
