Description
The School District of La Crosse is accepting applications for a 260-day, nonunion, 1.0 FTE Cultural and Family Connections Coordinator (6-12 with some K-12 project-based responsiblities) for the District beginning in the 2024-2025 school year. Projected start date: July 1, 2024
ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES:
Assist with coordination and development of all Cultural and Family Connection Program activities.
POSITION CHARACTERISTICS:
Recruited by: Director of Human Resources
Salary: Set annually by the Board of Education
Length of Contract: 12 months
POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Supervisor of Cultural and Family Connections
Coordinates with: Administrators, school staff, appropriate community agencies and organizations, and families/students
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Support families and students of racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.
2. Serve staff and administrators through dialogue and presentations on racially and ethnically diverse topics that will enhance understanding and implementation in a school setting.
3. Engage and develop various cultural initiatives and programming in the district and La Crosse community that benefit racially diverse and all students.
4. Support and advocate for equitable practices across the district.
5. Be visible to students, parents, schools, and the community.
6. Work with students in identity specific organizations.
Summary of Position:
Our mission is to educate, support, and engage our staff, families, and students on topics and issues of culture, race, and social justice. We strive to provide on-going programs that focus on academic success, students/staff development, advocacy, and community outreach.
The position serves as an advocate for racially diverse students (Southeast Asian, African American/Black, Native/Indigenous, Latinx, Biracial, Multiracial), their families and the schools, primarily serving the middle schools. Act as a link between families and the schools throughout the community. Provide staff development opportunities relative to cultural understanding and offer guidance with historical and cultural education as it relates to racially diverse populations. Help to coordinate family education programs and connect families to opportunities, and resources within the schools and throughout the community.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Families and Students:
a. Connect meaningfully and build relationships with racially and ethnically diverse families to increase their involvement and engagement with schools.
b. Promote academic success and leadership among racially and ethnically diverse students through program development.
c. Promote strategies for resolving conflict and for addressing the dynamics of difference with all students.
d. Provide programming to support racially and ethnically diverse students and families.
e. Act as an advocate for racially diverse students and families.
f. Conduct needs assessments and program and activity evaluations.
2. District/School:
a. Provide district-wide presentations and dialogues on various racially diverse topics to enhance district staff’s understanding and practice with racially diverse populations.
b. Examine and develop district-wide diversity and inclusion policies to:
c. Increase cultural awareness and practice for district leadership and staff.
d. Support culture-related practices in the district.
e. Provide input and education on district practices, initiatives and policies.
f. Collaborate with selected schools and assist with culturally responsive and humble systems implementation.
g. Act as a resource and provide advocacy for the district relative to culture and race issues in school resources, pedagogy, curriculum, and programming.
h. Support efforts to retain and recruit staff of color.
i. Seek grant funding for new and special programs.
3. Community Engagement:
a. Develop programming for students to be active members of their school and community.
b. Support and partner with community organizations that enhance and promote racially and ethnically diverse populations.
c. Develop relationships with the different racially diverse communities and organizations in the area.
d. Engage the community in the school programming for success of all students.
4. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor's degree required.
2. Teaching license preferred.
3. Established community connections, culturally competent and humble, and social justice-minded person.
4. Ability to engage students, families and community from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.
5. Experience in working effectively with racially diverse students and families (Southeast Asian, African American/Black, Native/Indigenous, Latinx, Biracial, and Multiracial).
6. Ability to speak multiple languages including English, Hmong, and Spanish, is preferred.
7. Basic understanding of budgeting practices.
8. Experience using a variety of technologies.
9. Strong communication skills.
