Spotsylvania County Public Schools is Hiring a School Security Officer - Ni River Middle School Near Fredericksburg, VA

Job Summary:

The School Security Officer (SSO) is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the school. School Security Officer presence is vital to maintaining order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating violations of school board policies, and detaining students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Patrols hallways, stairwells, restrooms, and parking areas.
  • Acts as a first responder to emergency incidents on school grounds and at school events.
  • Checks hall passes of students going to and from class.
  • Enforces school safety and security rules and regulations.
  • Monitors traffic and oversees the safety of students riding school buses and driving cars.
  • Participates in school committee meetings regarding student conduct, and threat assessments.
  • Checks parking permits of students and staff and reports violations to the office.
  • Maintains security during sporting events, lunch periods, and other activities.
  • Checks all windows, doors, and entrances of the building to make certain they are secured daily and reports any physical or mechanical damage to the school premises to the principal.
  • Works with administration to investigate and report any unusual conditions, disturbances, or possible violations of Code of Student Conduct.
  • Works with administration to conduct walkthroughs and check Emergency Exits, Fire Extinguishers, Building Evacuation Maps, and other safety checks as required.
  • Participates in lockdown and other safety drills; offers feedback to staff and administration for improvement.
  • Oversees the use and monitoring of the school security technology and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of school safety and security procedures, including Code of Student Conduct, emergency protocols (fire drills, lockdowns, etc.)
  • Understanding of federal and state laws regarding school security and student rights
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques
  • Understanding of basic First Aid, CPR, and AED use
  • Knowledge of building security systems and access control procedures
  • School policies and procedures, including student code of conduct
  • Fire safety and prevention procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations fairly and consistently
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build trust and rapport with students, staff, and parents
  • Ability to think critically and make sound decisions in emergency situations
  • Ability to operate security equipment effectively

Education and Experience:

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 21 years of age
  • Current (valid, not expired) Drivers License
  • Ability to obtain a Emergency First Aid, CPR & AED certification, Virginia Department of Criminal Justice (DCJS) compulsory training certification, and Mandt training certification within 60 days of hire

Preferred

  • Two (2) years of successful, full-time, experience in law enforcement or building security.

Employment Terms: The employee may work a 10-Month (200 Day), 10.5-Month (210 Day), 11-Month (220 Day) -OR- 12-Month (240 Day) contract, at a minimum of 7.5 hours worked per day. This position is evaluated annually.
