Job Summary:

Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center is seeking a highly skilled automotive instructor to train the next generation of Automotive students for entry-level roles in the vibrant transportation sector. The perfect candidate will possess expertise as an automotive service technician, a deep enthusiasm for the automotive industry, and a genuine commitment to imparting essential knowledge for students to excel as entry-level professionals in this field. This role involves instructing on comprehensive professional safety practices within the automotive industry and overseeing the organization of materials, supplies, budget, and tools essential for a fully operational automotive service shop. The Instructor must be able to motivate students to develop workplace readiness skills necessary for employment in the Automotive Industry. An essential function of this program is establishing relationships with the community, including students, parents, and local businesses. In addition, the instructor should be willing to support students during work-based learning opportunities.

Course Descriptions:

Automotive Technology I

In this course, students explore, handle, and perform basic functions in engine repair, automatic transmission and transaxle, manual drivetrain and axles, suspension and steering systems, and brakes. Students who successfully complete the Automotive Technology program may be eligible to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Student Certification examination. The ASE Student Certification is the first step in building a career as a service professional in the automotive industry.

Automotive Technology II

In this course, students build upon their basic knowledge of automotive technology, exploring more advanced tasks in engine repair, automatic transmission and transaxle, manual drivetrain and axles, suspension and steering systems, and brakes. They also learn about electrical, electronic, and HVAC systems in automobiles. Upon successful completion of the course, students may be eligible to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Student Certification examination.
Essential Functions:

  • Designs instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, current instructional practices, students, industry, and curriculum goals as outlined by the VA Department of Education Career and Technical Education Programs;
  • Evaluates student progress; provides students with prompt specific evaluative feedback; maintains appropriate records and prepares progress reports;
  • Manages the shop/lab materials and the facility in preparing students for entrance into the automotive services field;
  • Implements a classroom management policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff;
  • Works collaboratively with staff, families, and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population;
  • Builds and maintains cooperative and supportive relationships with the local automotive industry;
  • Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions
  • Recruit and retain students.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Possesses ASE certification in at least four areas A4, A5, A6, and A8 of Automobile and Light Truck repair plus the ASE G1 certification in automobile and light truck repair;
  • Three to five years of successful experience as an automotive service technician in a professional shop or dealership setting;
  • Familiarity with NATEF and ASE industry standards for technicians and shops;
  • Proven track record of safety on the job and ability to implement necessary safety protocols;
  • Applicants with teaching experience must have an acceptable rating from such teaching experience;
  • Possess or be eligible to acquire an appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

Salary: This is a 10.5-month position. Please see the starting salary below. Additional compensation is awarded for credits earned toward advanced degrees. New employees to Spotsylvania County will be compensated for up to 20 years of experience.
