Special Olympics is Hiring a Manager, Internal Communications Near Washington, DC

Position Title: Internal Communications Manager

Location: SOI DC HQ (Washington DC; Hybrid schedule: 2-3 days/week in office)

Department: Brand & Communications

Reports to: Senior Manager, Communications

Position Summary:

We are looking for an Internal Communications Manager to support the Special Olympics International (SOI) Brand & Communications team to help drive awareness about athletes and activities within the movement. The Manager, Internal Communications will plan and activate organizational communications tactics, processes, and resources grounded in the strategic direction of the department and organization.

The objectives of the Manager, Internal Communications are to:

  • Maximize the use of existing effective organizational communications approaches and processes
  • Enhance the quality of organizational communications approaches and processes to improve awareness of Special Olympics’ messages, decisions, and developments
  • Establish communications pathways that support a two-way and multi-directional exchange of ideas
  • Engage in public relations initiatives as part of the organization’s global strategic goals
  • Upkeep and maintain existing internal communications platforms

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Write and edit a range of materials including press releases, talking points, website copy, communications plans, reports, leadership messages, and newsletter articles
  • Support the department’s data-driven approach by regularly creating media monitoring dashboards, reports, and analysis
  • Draft content for internal and external platforms to promote upcoming engagement opportunities
  • Effectively interact across all departments and with staff around the world to lead organizational communications activities
  • Liaise with local Special Olympics Programs and ambassadors to arrange media interviews, webinar appearances, and podcast recordings
  • Create and maintain content for the organization’s various knowledge management tools
  • Edit video and audio content for use on digital platforms
  • Employ strong project management skills, including initiating, planning, executing, managing, and closing projects

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-4 years of experience working in a communications or public relations capacity
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills, including editing and proofreading
  • Video and audio editing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills across cultures
  • Ability to work well independently and under pressure while meeting deadlines
  • Think and solve critical issues creatively
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Smartsheet, and Adobe)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience or interest in the intellectual disabilities community, sports and/or Special Olympics
  • Familiarity with podcast and/or video production
  • Experience with internal/corporate communications
  • Understanding of media monitoring metrics
  • Prior media relations experience
