Southwest Research Institute is Hiring a Remote PRINCIPAL ENGINEER - STAFF ENGINEER - Spaceflight Deployable Structures Engineer - Remote

Who We Are:

The Electromechanical Systems Group is composed of mechanical engineers, technicians, and drafters within the Department of Space Instruments and Payloads, and is responsible for the mechanical development of spaceflight instrumentation, structures, and avionics.

Objectives of this Role:
  • Work in multidisciplinary project teams to support the development of spaceflight deployable structures.
  • Lead efforts to design, analyze, and build cutting edge space deployable structures to enhance the capabilities of small to medium sized spacecraft.
  • Interface with customers, and support design reviews to justify design decisions.
  • Support and lead R&D and promotional efforts to develop and implement new technologies.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Lead detailed design efforts for spaceflight deployable structures.
  • Lead supervision and fabrication efforts for spaceflight deployables; delegate fabrication work to junior engineers.
  • Test hardware to demonstrate instrument's robustness against the environmental conditions of launch and space.
  • Propose and perform internal research to improve technology and establish competitive advantage.
Requirements:
  • Requires a Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 15-25 years: Design experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software is required.
  • 15-25 years: Analysis experience using FEA and classical mechanics.
  • 15-25 years: Working knowledge of metallic and/or composite manufacturing processes for spaceflight applications is required.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

  • Defense and & Intelligence Solutions-Providing advanced direction finding and tracking systems through geolocation system development.
  • Fuels and Lubricants Research-Performing fuels and lubricants research activities to meet regulatory and competitive goals.
  • Intelligent Systems-Providing engineering services in resaerch and development of complex systems and equipment.
  • Mechanical Engineering-Improving safety, reliability, efficiency and life of new or existing mechanical components or systems.
  • Powertrain Engineering-Designing and developing vehicle and engine components to achieve performance and emissions goals.
  • Space Science & Engineering-Developing and managing advanced scientific payloads aboard satellites and sounding rockets.
