Job Details:

Southside Elementary Charter School is in the process of recruiting a caring, nurturing, creative classroom teacher to join our team, starting in May, 2023. Candidates must have a growth mindset and be willing to do whatever it takes to place all students on a path to college and community leadership. We are looking for a diverse pool of applicants representing a multitude of experiences and backgrounds including those which represent the rich diversity of the students we serve. SouthSide Elementary Charter School’s Mission:

SouthSide Elementary Charter School provides a diverse group of Providence kindergarten through fifth grade students with a solid step towards college and community leadership. Students learn to read, write, think logically, and problem solve on grade level within a curriculum that emphasizes academic rigor, excellence and community engagement in an extended school day and school year.

Instruction at SouthSide Elementary Charter School is aligned to the Rhode Island grade level expectations, Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. Assessments are used to identify students' needs and tailor instruction accordingly. Our teachers and learning partners receive targeted feedback and support from their principal and from their peers and are motivated by a desire to continuously improve their practice. Likewise, all of our teachers and learning partners are held accountable for clearly outlined student learning outcomes.

Our school day and year are both extended and teachers are held to high expectations to collaboratively plan a full day of standards-based instruction that maximizes learning time. The extended school day and school year at SouthSide Elementary Charter School are part of the high expectations emphasis at our school. Teachers take full advantage of every second of learning time so that our students receive eight plus hours a day of high quality standards-based instruction. Teachers are required to work 8-hour shifts and attendance at evening family engagement events is requested on an alternating basis.

Responsibilities of a Southside Elementary Charter School Elementary Grade Teacher include, (but are not limited to):

  • Plan academically rigorous units that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards, NGSS Standards and RI Grade Level Expectations using the Understanding by Design Framework
  • Teach all core academic subjects (ELA, math, science, and social studies)
  • Thoughtfully plan lessons and assessments that build students’ basic skills and motivate students to engage in higher level thinking
  • Use the Data Cycle of Inquiry to identify students’ needs and plan instruction and interventions for a diverse group of learners
  • Incorporate research-based best practices in addressing students’ social emotional needs and explicitly teach socio-emotional skills to promote pro-social behaviors
  • Collaborate with teachers, specialists, administration, and community partners to create a dynamic, experiential and hands-on learning environment
  • Create and manage a classroom culture in collaboration with the team to build an exceptional academic, social, and emotional public school experience for the students in your class
  • Implement Responsive Classroom practices to maintain a positive, supportive, and collaborative classroom community that is conducive to learning
  • Utilize the Collaborative Problem Solving approach to address and manage student behaviors proactively
  • Positively frame behavioral expectations and adhere to the agreed upon school-wide behavior system reflected in Southside Elementary Charter School’s core values
  • Implement the workshop model of instruction throughout all academic subjects
  • Participate actively in all school professional development opportunities
  • Attend and participate in family engagement events and school-sponsored activities
  • Differentiate instruction for all students based on their educational needs, interests and learning styles
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external community stakeholders
  • Build positive relationships with students and their families grounded in the belief that all students can achieve at high levels
  • Make learning fun, engaging, and rigorous
  • Set Student Learning Objectives that specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely

Professionalism & Collaboration

  • Co-teach and co-plan with colleagues
  • Participate in and lead professional development activities
  • Conduct yourself in accordance with Southside Elementary Charter School’s mission and values
  • Participate in family engagement activities
  • Maintain proper records including submitting daily attendance, grading daily work, creating weekly lesson plans, and completing trimester progress reports in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate organization skills and meet deadlines in a timely manner
  • Other assigned tasks as identified by the Director

In addition, SouthSide Elementary Charter School Teachers are expected to:

  • Thrive in a collaborative setting
  • Develop and refine Southside Elementary Charter School’s curriculum
  • Do whatever it takes to ensure the mission of the school is attained

Qualifications:

  • RI Teacher Certification Required
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Special Education Certification preferred
  • 3 years of Urban school experience preferred
  • MLL Certification preferred
  • Spanish speaking preferred

Southside Elementary Charter School offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.

Professional development is job-embedded and ongoing at Southside Elementary Charter School and supported through multiple opportunities, both internally through Southside Elementary Charter School’s regularly structured professional development times and outside the organization through professional conferences, coursework, and professional associations.

Position Type: Full-time, 190 academic days and 10 professional days; hours are 7:15-3:15
