HOW YOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT
A Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for the duties related to the fluent operations of the swim lesson program. This includes the organizational skills and aid in the promotion of the YMCA swim lesson program, understanding of the YMCA mission, and an understanding and ability to teach others of the YMCA character values.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITES INCLUDE:
  • CPR/AED and First Aid classes are taught at the YMCA quarterly. If you cannot attend these provided classes, then you must attend at class offered by another authorized provider i.e. Margret Mary Community Hospital. The Y will pay for your class fee but will not pay for your time at the training.
  • Create and be flexible in daily lesson plans.
  • Organize to correctly and efficiently use all of the allotted time for swim lessons. (30 to 45 minutes) Play time should only be used in the last 5 minutes of class and directly relate to skills taught in class.
  • Use the provided time for proper preparations for all swim lessons to provide the utmost in the YMCA swim lessons.
  • Communicate well with children and work to make each child feel comfortable in an aquatic environment.
  • Communicate well with parents. Make sure they understand their child’s progress and understand how our YMCA swim lesson program works. Keep them informed of upcoming registrations and make sure they know what level to register their child for, before the last week of class.
  • Mid-session reports are handed out at the 5th class of the session. The mid-session report is to properly inform families of what stage you the instructor are recommending the family sign their simmer up for in the next session. Report Cards are handed out at the final class of the session. Report cards must be turned in to the Aquatics Director the week before they are handed out to the families. Be sure that at the 5th class of the session, you encourage participants to be present at the final class.
  • Remain current in all required certifications, CPR and First Aid.
  • Always keep good, current, and accurate records throughout each session, and be sure to always turn in appropriate paperwork to the Aquatics Director in a timely fashion. Be sure to understand the importance in the record keeping system and respect and follow the scheduled due dates.
  • Ensure those using the pool for free swim, do not interfere with your swim lessons. Lifeguards should be able to help manage non-program swimmers.
  • Know where the proper areas of the pool are to conduct your classes.
  • Begin and end all classes on time.
  • Equipment and lessons plans should be ready before classes are schedule to begin.
  • When teaching Y curriculum, be sure each skill is practiced before the end of the session. All skills must be performed with confidence by each student before advancing them to the next level, especially, but not limited to, swimming required distances without assistance. All skills should be performed with confidence.
  • Know how to use discipline properly and respectfully to ensure the safety of your class participants, and to ensure bad behavior doesn’t interfere with your class progression.
  • Do your best to keep children active during their lessons and not sitting on the side of the pool waiting but be sure to never put a non-swimmer in a dangerous situation.
  • Know when to talk to the Aquatics Director when children continuously disrupt class by not listening, crying, or refusing to participate in class.
  • Educated and enforce class and pool rules with your participants.
  • Be prompt with turning in session availability for scheduling purposes and turn in progress trackers and report cards by scheduled due dates.
  • Be encouraging and enthusiastic when reminding families to register again in the next session.
  • Be sure to complete your onboarding checklist and any and all assigned online courses.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
  • A swim lesson instructor must be at least 14 years of age.
  • Experience working with children is required, a strong swimming background is preferred by not required.
  • Child CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications Required. If the instructor does not have these certifications upon being hired, they must receive these certifications within the first 3 months of employment.
  • Good organizational skills, leadership and communication skills and a good understanding of the YMCA Swim Lesson program.
